Strength in numbers

Kalen Holliday

Kalen could use a friend right now. And thus, naturally, instead of calling his friends he has come to Washington Park.

There is no scarecrow by the lake. There is almost never a scarecrow by the lake, but Kalen has yet to give up hope of seeing The Message again. Washington Park is also where he runs into other friends and fascinating things happen. It is largely for that first thing that he has spread a wool blanket over the ground at the base of a tree and settled down to stay awhile. He's sprawled partly on the blanket and partly against the tree.

He's been in and out of Denver and he's running with no few projects simultaneously, so he is sipping at coffee. However much he loves Washington Park and however much he would like a nap, this is not the place for sleeping. At least not alone. There are books in the bad that he brought, but he is not reading through any of them in an attempt to cling to productivity. Instead, he watches the park through half-closed eyes. Both he and the park are calm enough for that, at least for the moment.

[And, how distracted by Resonance are we?]

[Ugh...]

Alexander Brandt

One thing that an observer might have noticed about Alexander since his ‘release’ was just how much time he was spending outdoors. He had always been an active person, preferring to be outside than stuck inside, but this was almost being taken to an extreme. Home was somewhere to store things, to sleep. He had some plans to change some things – those white walls needed painting, for one thing – but they were things that he was in no rush to get to.

The park calls to him for a similar reason to Kalen. It’s somewhere peaceful in the city, and it’s a place with memories tied to it. He comes here looking for the same scarecrow, although not really expecting to find it. There had been… maybe not a promise as such, but certainly an acknowledgement that travelling through the Umbra together was something that he and The Message could both get something from. Alex had no way to get through the Umbra – yet, anyway – and so he returned from time to time to see if The Message had decided that it was time. Not yet.

There is something he picks up on, though, close to the lake. There’s a presence close to the tree line, something that makes him tense up. He doesn’t turn to look, but it’s something he would always remember. Something Potent, Incisive and Reflective. He has a light jacket on, which he reaches into to check for something. He doesn’t close, doesn’t turn to look. He walks away.

Grace

Kalen, trusting in Fate, just brings another blanket as means to summon friends. If he were anyone else, if Denver wasn't what it is, this might not work. Fortunately for him, he is Kalen and Denver is Denver.

Denver sometimes likes to be a dick, though.

Grace is Grace. Taking straight lines through curving sidewalks, only moving for the trees, because the probably won't move for her.

She's in nature, yes, but distracted by her phone, because this is the kind of relaxation a Mercurial Elite enjoys. Get away from it all, and plug into the all.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen senses Resonance, but it isn't familiar. Interesting, but unfamiliar.

There was a time when he would have gone to chase down this new Mage. Evaluate them. Offer them things.

What does he have to offer now? Not Ginger. Not the library. He himself is hardly in a position to take on a student. Friends? He in't sure he's in much of a position for that either.

But then there is Grace, proceeding linearly through the park. And so, he chases nothing, at least for now. Instead he waits. Perhaps Grace will get this new Mage. Perhaps Grace will come alone. Regardless, he stays where he is.

Alexander Brandt

[I AM NOT SERAFINE!! But at least we can get them talking now.]

Alexander Brandt

Alex walks around the edge of the lake, getting further from that unseen resonance. It brings him closer to another, though. Something familiar, someone who had come to see him out at the motel. This time, no awkward semi-nakedness to get in the way. He pats his jacket pocket again, reassuring himself that he has some kind of protection. Hopefully it won’t be needed, but you never can tell. He gets closer to her, skipping the niceties as he tells her, “I think I just felt a Technocrat.” He jerks his head in the direction of the treeline, still not turning to look.

Grace

[Awareness!]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (2, 3, 4, 6, 8) ( success x 2 )

Grace

Grace looks up, smiles at Alex, until his serious face and words sink in, and that's no longer the appropriate response. The seriousness in Alex's face gets reflected, then.

"Kalen's here. We should get with him. Strength in numbers," she says, though she doesn't sense anything more than friendlies, herself.

She then sets off, quicker now, more alert now, in the direction she had already been taking.

Alexander Brandt

Grace starts to head off again, but Alex grabs her arm to stop her. “If it’s who I think it is, he’s powerful. More powerful than Sera is, or Victoria was.” Now he starts scanning the treeline, looking for some sign of movement. His hand goes pack into his jacket and stays there this time, a faint click of something metallic following.

“With you on the safety in numbers, though.” He walks along side Grace when she sets off again, although does slow down if their route seems to be heading towards that feeling of resonance he picked up on moments before.

Grace

Their route is heading toward Kalen, if that is where Alex is afraid to go. But look, it's him, on a blanket, and Grace is undisturbed.

Well, maybe a little disturbed by the noises coming from behind her.

"Let's try using diplomancy first? If it comes to that. But I'm glad you're prepared."

Kalen Holliday

Kalen looks up to see Grace approaching with the new Mage, who appears not to be new at all.

Different. Everything is different because of things that happened and Alexander feels different. Kalen is used to reaching out and breathing in the solidity of Alexander's Resonance, but now Alexander is closer to the kind of infinite possibility that Kalen has always seen. Closer to what he should be, perhaps.

Grace is with him though. And Grace wouldn't bring him here if he was angry. If she knew. Would she know?

He sets down his coffee, rises from his sprawl, and heads slowly out to meet them. They are wary of potential Technocrats. Kalen is wary because abandoning him, one way or another, is basically what people do.

"Hey," he says quietly as he reaches them. Just that. And then he studies them, more Alexander than Grace, as he waits.

Alexander Brandt

Let’s try using diplomacy first?

“Right. Sure.” Because that’s totally what got him into the whole pile of shit two months ago. Nothing to do with being shot in the leg with a tranquiliser, nothing to do with blacking out after having his knee destroyed by gunfire. Either way, he isn’t planning on shooting the floor if circumstances ever repeat themselves.

He still slows as they close with Kalen’s rug, expecting… something. “Oh, I’m the proverbial boy scout, right?”

It isn’t Kalen that he’s expecting to see. He doesn’t immediately react to seeing him, instead turning to check the other parts of the park that are visible from where they are. The bastard must have gone somewhere. He is still a little paranoid in some ways, but now he knows that the bad guys really are out there. He finds… nothing. Nobody. There’s a deep growl, followed by another faint click and Alex’s hand coming out from his jacket.

“Hey.” The distraction fades and Kalen’s presence is registered more. That much is obvious, as Alex closes the distance between them and pulls Kalen into a bear hug. “I’ve missed you.”

Grace

Grace watches them hug, but more importantly, watches the people, keeps her senses open. And then, takes her phone out again.

"Alex thought he sensed a Technocrat. I'm going to set up some protection," she says, all business and focus.

[Corr 2: Stiffening space against Corr manipulation. Diff 5, -1 = taking time]

Kalen Holliday

Infinite possibility is a thing with which Kalen has at least a passing acquaintance. And he has, on occasion, been accused of unchecked optimism and completely foundless hope.

Hell, he has tried to make peace with vampires and wants to make peace with the Technocracy. He loves to live in the edges of the world where improbability and reality and faith and hope collide into something transcendent.

And Kalen Holliday, despite all of these things, never considered this possibility for his reunion with Alexander. He does not, at all, fight with being hugged. Kalen fighting against hugs is not a common occurrence, particularly from people he is close to. It takes a second for him to process exactly what this moment is, because he expected something so very different.

"Missed you too."

Grace mentions a potential Technocrat, but Kalen stays where he is. Grace with get them some kind of protection. Alexander is there. And most of what Kalen can do about the Technocracy he could do without stepping away from Alexander anyway. And, from here, no one is taking Alexander without taking him. There is, also, that.

"Welcome home," he says softly.

Alexander Brandt

Alexander has changed. More than the simple (or not so simple) changing of his resonance, he had been given something of a wake-up call over the past couple of months. Part of that is that he needs other people. He’d pushed others away before, when things were going badly. He might return to old ways later, but for now? For now he doesn’t push, but pulls them closer. Kiara had been the first, now Kalen. Others, too, who are close to Alex may well get the same reaction when he meets them. Other who may be equally surprised.

Welcome home.

“Funny that. It finally does feel like home.” He releases Kalen, turning back to scan the park. “But, yeah. I felt…” A pause. “Someone.” There’s the flow of Grace’s resonance around them as she does something that Alex can’t, yet, comprehend. With more experience, a greater connection with reality, he might be able to do something more to help. His connection had strengthened, but it was something that he was barely beginning to scratch the surface of: that being able to make a change, rather than standing and watching. But he’s never been one to sit and watch others do all the work. So he looks around, concentrating on finding that familiar resonance again.

Grace

Grace is still hard at Work. She clunks her phone hard across the side, because sometimes you need to do a bit of manual debugging, right? Not everything is going smoothly with this. But if she tries, really hard...

Oblivious to the rest of the world, she continues trying to weave the connections of the world in on themselves so that they cannot be used...

[Extending, with wp, because the code is being dumb]

Dice: 3 d10 TN5 (1, 7, 8) ( success x 3 ) [WP]

Kalen Holliday

Alexander releases Kalen and Kalen takes a half step away. He stays close. He has sensed nothing. There is, even if there are Technocrats present, some chance that there may be no cause to fight. No need to get aggressive and provoke anyone. He tries to remember Ms. Grey and that Technocrat from the coffeehouse more than any of his other experiences with them.

Years of coming to the conclusion that more blood is not the way to the world he wants war against a decade of training that his enemies are clear and his responses are equally clear.

Grace is still working, so, for now, he waits. Alert enough, but not quite concerned enough to be spooked. His eyes scan over the park

"Once you're ready, Kit," he says quietly. "I suggest a change of location."

Alexander Brandt

“Dammit.” It’s a mild curse, quietly spoken. Maybe the guy had moved on, or used some way to hide himself.

Experience shapes actions, and recent experience has perhaps made Alexander a little less tolerant in some ways. Blood is, mostly, not the first option unless it can’t be helped. But there are now certain circumstances where he is more likely to fight before talking. More than standing between an Apprentice and her potential abductor, this is something more targeted. Something that comes from fear that it could happen again. And a very certain attitude that he wouldn’t be caught again.

Alex nods, though, at the suggestion of changing location. “Being somewhere else seems like a great idea right now.” He hasn’t completely shifted the idea that he’s still being watched, but there doesn’t seem to be an immediate danger now.

Grace

"Yeah," she says to Kalen. "I was making it harder for them to track us on the way to said location."

She sighs and lets her eyes scan the park again, a little upset at how weak her shield was, but what can you do?

"Let's go."

Go where? That's something she leaves unsaid, because there's more than one way to find out where people are going to go.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen glances between the two of them. It takes him less than ten seconds to come up with a workable plan and then an alternate plan. He takes the few steps to pick up his coffee and his blanket, then looks back to them and smiles.

"My car?" Apparently he isn't interested in broadcasting their destination, or potential destinations, either.

Alexander Brandt

“Works for me.” Alex would normally offer to help Kalen carry something, but he doesn’t want to get his arms tied up with anything right at the moment. He lets Kalen lead, knowing where the car is currently parked. “I can drive.” It seems sensible: he assumes that he’s had the most experience behind a wheel, and the others can do more if they’re not distracted by patty issues like not driving under an 18-wheeler. Still, there’s no talk of location until they’re safely away from this one.

Objects in the rear view mirror are further than they seem [Mood]

Some time had passed since Alexander had left the solitude of the motel room.  He had left it in much the same state as it had been when he’d arrived, although anything perishable would have been tossed in the trash on the way out.  Whatever passes for housekeeping would pass through at some point, righting whatever was left.  Other than whatever remnants of his resonance that lingered in the walls, it would almost be as if he’d never been there.

He had returned home, but it had only been a flying visit.  Long enough to pack some bits and pieces into a backpack, change into his biker gear, toss a few frozen mice out onto the balcony for the owl that was perched and slumbering on its safety rail, and collect his bike.  He wasn’t vanishing without trace, at some attempt to disappear out of fear of being found and captured again.  He had told those who had come to visit him of his plans.

Other than a monthly phone call home, he had lost contact with his previous life in Seattle.  No, this wasn’t escape.  This was a road trip home, to catch up with family and old friends, and to live a perfectly normal life for a short while.  His mother had been surprised when he’d knocked on the front door as the light of sunset was fading into darkness, but he had been welcomed in without question or reservation or doubt.  It had been the same story when he’d caught up with the guys from his old station, blowing the dust and cobwebs off the friendships that had been built on the streets.

Time had passed, and it was almost tempting to move back.  Life had been so much simpler.  But it wasn’t the place that had become complicated.   He had.  That kind of complication wasn’t something that you could get away from, unless you intended to run forever.  Alexander had time to think in the days where he’d sped along road and highway, miles of asphalt passing under his tyres.  Hours to consider his options: to disappear and try to carve out a new life somewhere, or to reclaim the life that was still stuck in some kind of limbo in Denver.

The prospect of running and hiding away in some dead end town, moving on before anybody got suspicious about the weird things that tended to follow their kind around didn’t appeal.  It wasn’t an option he was really considering, but it was the memory of his Seeking that finalised the decision.  He wasn’t going to let his life be caged by the fear of what might happen.  There had been a push to change, to work towards something.  Maybe to build and create, or maybe just to protect and defend.

We have so much work to do.

It had been hard to leave, but Seattle wasn’t his life any more.  He’d started to notice the distance between him and his friends.  Their lives had grown in different directions, each person changing in subtle ways.  There were people that he was closer to now in Denver.  And those are the people he returns to.

Alexander had timed his return to the city intentionally.  His route passed through the mountains and he stopped in a rest area before the sun rose.  Bike parked, Alex sat himself on the top of a picnic bench and dug out a flask of coffee from his backpack, now sat on the ground against the leg of the bench.  He poured out a cup and leant back to wait.

It didn’t take long for him to find a little wonder in the world.

Then it was time to return.

Home.

Poor hunted thing [In progress]

Alexander

Alexander

Things may have changed, although whether that was for the better or the worse remained to be seen. The visits with Keller had stopped; a woman had told him of his upcoming release. Although for release, read people are coming to break you out because we can’t just let you walk out without others noticing, but we’ll try to get people looking the wrong way. Hardly the stuff to inspire confidence, especially when part of this play needs him to take some kind of preparation to fake his death. But given the option of that unknown, or the known of his death or the loss of who he is if he didn’t go along with it? There isn’t really a choice to make.

The various newspapers and magazines had continued to appear with each meal, and Alexander had started skimming the contents to catch up on what had happened in fuck, it really is two months? He still has more than enough spare time, though. Time that he still spends inside his head, rather than staring at the walls.

Lying on his back on the bed, feeling the press of the unforgiving mattress against his bones, Alex tries to quiet his mind again. Rather than letting his mind skip and skim over random memories and ideas, there’s one particular one that he has in mind this time. A forest grove, under a twilight sky. The same grove he’s come across before.

Alexander

[Per+Lucid Dreaming]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (1, 3, 3, 6, 7) ( success x 2 )

Alexander has a particular grove in mind.

A ring of oaks, their crowns blasted; their branches, charred black; their leaves, golden - pale; three paths (more?) to follow. Here he is again, and again with a lonely sense of something to Do, should he choose to accept that emotional weight draped over him, a mantle, by this dreamscape he has come to (which will belong to him? A sanctuary, safe-house? The kingdoms of the mind are dangerous, and full of strange things). Here he is again, the sky a bowl of aching copper and fire; burnished gold, dusk falling; dusk drifting into the grays of twilight.

To the east there is still that dense wall of thorns, of brambles, except - not so dense. The path he made remains, though it feels as though (of course it feels as though) some more time has passed since he last stood in this place. Perhaps his earlier self is just reaching the lake, sprouting owl wings, and soon will launch himself forward -

But he, his current self, is in the grove, lagging behind, or waiting to catch up, or just: waiting for the right moment.

Alexander

This is still something new to Alexander, something still to be uncovered and explored and understood. Something that he might be more cautious about had he known more about what he was doing, but, well, he didn’t. The exploration is very much a blind endeavour, and very much about learning to rules and the limitations to this place. It’s an assumption that this place, this grove, is the entrance into the dream, or the meditation, or whatever else this could be that he hasn't begun to realise yet. It’s an assumption that he isn’t able to enter elsewhere: perched in a tree by a fire-tinged lake, wings ready to take him into the air again. Some of the lessons about belief and will still need to be learned.

So it is the grove that Alexander reaches out for, and finds it in much the same state that he last saw it. That the path he’d created the last time was still there is a little surprising, but again: is that simply because it’s how his mind pictured the grove when he went looking, or is there something more to this place than he really understands.

The urge is there, once again: to Do. Something new? Something unfinished? Because there are two unfinished tasks that he has. The first, to track some injured, mythical beast. The other, to find out what had been trapped in the middle of that impossibly still lake. There are other places to explore here, but those two tasks both lie in the same direction. So rather than strike out in a new direction, Alexander follows his previous footsteps. Along the path, down its twists and descents, and back to the lake with its line of shoes standing sentinel over the water.

Alexander

[Perc+Alertness]

Dice: 6 d10 TN7 (1, 2, 2, 7, 8, 10) ( success x 3 )

oneiros

He can, quite literally, follow his own footsteps, see where the impression of his boots has made a mark in the hard-scrabble dust or the soft-giving loam, can see where he trode last time on his way down the stairs that were not quite stairs, the ledges set into the steepening slant of the hill. He comes once more to a massive tree: there is a sharp drop, a foot perhaps, and then there is the lake. The lake is still still and calm, and the burnished sky - oh, heavens! How it smoulders - is mirrored back at itself. Narcissus sky; perhaps here it will drown in its own beauty. The trail of blood looks - less fresh than it was before. And the line of shoes by the lake's edge are still standing, row by row, pointing out toward the lake. There is a difference he will spy: a feather, caught in Sara's shoes (which are still straightened; still the way he left them).

And there is the cave, at the root of the tree;

a cave leading down, down, down,

blood-road.

And there, because he knows to look for it, are the cresting spires of a drowned tree, twisted into (perhaps) some form of cage out there in the center of the lake, some Thing inside them caught. He can see some movement.

Alexander

Here, now, there is a more of a choice. The place, almost the same as last time. An addition – a feather, his? – sits forlornly, tangled in a shoe. Like the small changes in the grove, it raises questions. Whether this was down to his memory, and the vagaries and variances that naturally creep in, or if this really was a place that continued to exist when he wasn’t here. (But, then, he can’t use magic in this cell so how is he getting here? Odd.)

The choice, though. To fly again, to check out the tree. Or to follow the trail of blood. It seemed as if time had passed, so the creature was likely still in trouble. Or dead, hunted down by whatever had attacked it. Whatever was in the cage didn’t seem to be in any great, immediate danger. The thought of leaving it stranded and confined rankled, but it seemed like the better thing to do to follow the more immediate thread. And, hell, he’d gotten back here once then he could do it again, right? If it came down to it, the cage could be investigated on another trip.

Rather than the air, Alexander heads into the earth and follows the trail of blood.

Under the oak, the trail narrows immediately; the blood goes this way, and so the beast must have gone this way, the poor hunted thing - and under the massive tree, the darkness is a cobwebby darkness, which is not to say that there are cobwebs, but that the darkness feels tacky, almost like it might cling to and gather at Alexander's joints, any place his body casts a natural shadow on itself or is darker, might hover there like moths to a flame but the opposite. The darkness is not total; he can still see; it is a blue, evening darkness; a dismal gray, which turns everything chiaroscuro, blurred charcoal sketches. Down he goes; he can do that. Even when the path begins to wind, becomes to become laborious, he is dextrous enough to slip through, climb over juts of roots, follow the blood. He puts his hand down in it once; or almost does. His hand hovers just above it and he has a moment in which he can stop himself;

he can feel, from that drop of blood, this golden radiance; his hand cups it; it touches his hand. It is the dream of what holding hands might be, just the halo kicking off a mere drop of the blood mixed with this dark dirt under the tree.

He begins to hear the sound of water, whooshing gently, sea-shell echoes;

and he picks out the change in texture of the darkness where the shadowy dirt under-root path suddenly steeps off into water. He's beneath the tree, which is beneath the lake?, which is flooding; the path continues beyond the water, but to take it he will need to hold his breath or drown and perhaps still drown, unless there is another way.

This is his dream; the beast must have gone that way.

There is no fork in the path; not yet.

Except: off to the side - this slender glint of light.

Alexander

The cave may be dark, but dark isn’t necessarily something to be afraid of. There is, usually, no malice in it. It is simply the absence of light. Had the way become too much harder, Alexander might have tried to change things again. To bring more light, or straighten the path. But, so far, it wasn’t impassable. Challenging, yes, but – as had been pointed out not so long ago (two months or more, maybe it had been that long ago) – worthwhile things are rarely easy. So he climbs and clambers and reaches out...

But he stops himself before he reaches out and touches the blood, bracing himself against a root with his other hand. There’s something about it that holds him back; the power of it, buried as the few drops are in the dirt. It’s something that brings back the thoughts from last time: that the tears of whatever this beast was could cure all. It doesn’t seem far-fetched right now.

So Alexander moves on, careful not to touch the blood as he does. He doesn’t know what will happen if he does, but there’s no rush to test that out right now. The push is still forward, to track the beast. And maybe its hunters.

He reaches the water and stops in his tracks, puzzled. Perhaps this creature can breathe underwater? Perhaps it’s something like an otter or a beaver, just as happy swimming the depth as it is on land. He crouches to get a closer look at the edge of the water, perhaps looking to trace blood or tracks, when the glint of something at the edge of his vision causes him to turn and look. No, darkness has its uses. He may not have spotted that if it had been lighter. He looks towards the light, straightening again – as much as he can in the cave.

Alexander

[Per+Alertness]

Dice: 6 d10 TN8 (3, 5, 5, 7, 9, 10) ( success x 2 )

He sees nothing when he looks directly toward the glint, but enough when he turns his head again to realize that he caught a hint of something half-buried in the dirt and the roots - something that looks like a seal, or a door-knocker, something metallic and - well who's to say what its shape is? It is mostly buried; just this sinuous little twist visible for a moment.

Alexander

The lake, with its shoes and its tree and its (potential) cage was something of a distraction the last time he came here. This glimmer of light tied to something metal is potentially another, something else to pull him away from tracking this injured (hunted?) beast. It’s something that draws his curiosity, but it could be something that could wait until another time. Unless, of course, that the beast somehow went that way before the wall collapsed in around it.

Alexander scans the floor of the cave again, but the twilight doesn’t penetrate well this deep into the cave. The darkness makes it harder. Light, then. It’s a cave, dark and gloomy and wet. Surely a place that some glowing moss would grow? Maybe luminescent crystal formations? Anything, really, that would grant a little more light for his study of the ground. He places his hand on an overhanging root and runs his palm along it as he tries to make another change to this world.

Alexander

[Per+Lucid Dreaming]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (2, 2, 2, 3, 6) ( success x 1 )

veritas

Down by the water, trailing underneath it and up the wood-dirt-rootwork walls, nascent glimmering moss - the light is scant, but sufficient for Alexander to tell that, no, no, the beast certainly went down through the water, down into that darkness (somewhat illumined by the moss, which is golden), and then up again where ever the water comes out.

He can also see that it is almost certainly a door, half-buried in that dirt, and the root under his palm is wet and slimy, and the moss that his palm has left behind is as tangled as a goat's beard and as coarse.

Alexander

The door was a temptation. Something to be unearthed and explored, to see where else this almost-literal rabbit hole led. It was tempting, but Alex had the feeling that he’d lost some time in between visits here. Who knew how much longer he’d have this visit. So, as with the cage, this is something that he resolves to return to another time. (Assuming that it would still be here, assuming that there isn’t anything else shaping this place than his mind. So many assumptions.)

No, it’s the trail of blood that draws him onwards this time. The trail that leads down into the water, down into deeper darkness. It’s too dark to tell how far it leads. If it had been short he might have just dived straight in and followed the cave onwards. A little longer and he might have pushed to change the world again. To seal and clear the tunnel, to force an open path through the water, to change the world and hold the deluge back.

No, this time it’s himself he tries to change. But how? Surround himself with a bubble of air? How long would he be under water for? Would it burst as soon as it touched something sharp? (Were those kinds of rules present here?) Simpler, maybe, to breathe water then. It would give him the freedom to travel, if the cave was long or branched out or – maybe – opened up into the lake itself.

He can breathe water.

He can no longer breathe air, but that hasn't yet become a problem that he needs to fix in his dream, and under he goes. The water feels cold; he will remember it as feeling cold; and the further he swims along the tunnel (the faint trail of glowing moss trickles out, but not before he sees what looks like a patch of fur, caught by a jagged rock - oh, yes, there are jagged rocks; crumbling stones, sharp bits of - metal? Yes, metal - ).

The tunnel narrows; his lungs don't ache. He could swim beneath this water forever, but the tunnel also, as it narrows, begins to angle upward.

There's a place where it is so narrow he can feel it on all sides of him. He can feel the part that goes up - and he can feel what might be, just perhaps, another branch of submerged tunnel, going to the left. Which way, Alexander?

This place – this world? – splits and branches, paths leading towards different destinations. Is it the journey that matters? Maybe, but then there are so many of those potential journeys here too. How long would it take to explore them all? What would happen if he spent too long here? Questions, always more questions.

Alexander throws himself into the water, confident that the world has twisted again and will allow him to do what he feels that he needs to – to breathe water. It’s an interesting sensation, that. To be floating under water, but without the increasingly burning urge for air. Another form of freedom? Well, maybe.

The tunnel continues, narrowing. It’s not enough to stop his progress, but it is enough to start getting claustrophobic. He’d been distracted enough to not really notice how the walls of the caves blocked the sky. There had been enough space before he’d dove in to be able to spin around and head back the way he’d come, back out to the burning sky and the mirrored lake. Now, with the walls narrowing and closing and constricting, it gets harder to ignore. Alexander’s breathing gets faster, shallower, as he begins to panic. He worries that he may become stuck, trapped again. (How do I get out? Just wake up? What if I can’t? Nobody knows I’m here...)

There’s a choice of paths to follow, but it’s not a choice immediately made. He still has control of himself, closes his eyes and wills his breathing a little slower, as he really pushes this time to make a change.

Space. Need space.

And, although it takes a concerted push, he has more space. The tunnel no longer brushes against him; he could raise one arm in one direction and his fingers would not touch the wall. He could raise one arm in the other direction and - and his knuckles would scrape stone or dirt or jagged pieces of metal, the root-laced tumble-fall of hard things which make this tunnel solid. But it is more space, and the choice still waits for him:

Up, or to the side.

Alexander

Alex pushes against the walls, although he isn’t sure if it’s his physical (or whatever passes for physical here) hands or his will that makes the push. All he knows is that it’s tootightoosmall and that he needs space. And space he gets. Not a massive amount of it, but enough to move. Enough to turn and return, and that is just enough to stop him doing that right this second. The knowledge that there is some path to freedom. (Freedom? When his body is still trapped?)

His breathing deepens, but there’s still a rapidity about it that hadn’t been there before. The fear was simply held at bay, not extinguished altogether. But, tamed for now, it let his attention spread out around him again. It came back to the choice. Up or to the side. Is there any sign of which way the beast went? Some tuft of fur or slip of blood caught on a rock? Light, first. As before, a push for something to light the way.

[Yeah yeah, twisting the dream again.]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (1, 4, 6, 8, 9) ( success x 3 )

There is no tuft of fur other than the one a few feet behind him, but Alexander may well guess that it continued going up, rather than bounding to the side from where-ever the fur was hooked; that seems like the easier path for a panicked beast to take, dripping blood, frightened for its life - not the end of its life, perhaps, because a dead animal cannot cry now, can it? (Which would mean - what instead?)

He pushes for more light: make it so, make it bright,

that is the first Word, and it is good, light,

luminous, bright, shining -

And here it is a flashlight, a torch, which the current must have twisted so it would shine on, bright beam strong and sure and the flashlight itself wedged between the twisty metal tines metal veins metal - metal swords? Metal swords, mishapen, half-melted, pouring out of the wall, running in rivulets into the stone. He can take the flashlight up easily, shine it up ahead, shine it to the side.

To the side:

a shoal of silver fish, glinting; another tunnel, this one more root-impacted than ever, and what looks like an apple.

Up ahead: the tunnel seems to broaden (did he do that?), and the melting swords seem to have melted from that angle; one wall coalesces into - stone? Stone, root-tangled? And the other remains dirt - and then -

well he has to go further to see more, doesn't he?

He does.

Alexander

Compared to the effort it took to even sense something in the waking world, it seems almost effortless to change the world here. Perhaps this is how it used to be, where Awakened could twist reality to their whim when its fabric has been fluid rather than tightly woven, where the hanging sword of Paradox was less of a concern. There’s a twisting of this world as Alexander wants it to be otherwise, and the change is there.

The torch is pulled out of its nook, light blazing out as it gets diffracted by the water. Walls, molten blades twisted together, line the way ahead. It makes him wonder, what this had been before. Had it been something before? Or was this simply how this place had been created? Again, a curiosity about whether this was all his doing or if there were other things with influence here. The hunters, maybe?

It’s the larger path that Alexander follows. Partly, maybe, an unconscious nudge towards the space; partly because it seems the more logical path to follow if he wants to catch up with this beast. He holds one arm ahead, grasping the torch and angling its blade of light ahead, before pushing off with his legs. Onwards and upwards.

veritas

Up, and up, and up again, and then:

the light at the end of the tunnel. The tunnel becomes essentially a pool (he knows how deep it is: very), and the pool opens up into a stone room. Tall, almost a Cathedral, if a Cathedral were to be modeled after a great ship turned downward and made of stone. The light is green; the windows, thick-glass and shield-worthy, keeping water back. Until the very highest window, a circular one, which is open onto clear sweet air, the whole (monstrous large) church-room is under water. Drowned. The air he's breathing might have been around for ages: a strange pocket.

Air he's breathing? He isn't breathing any air at all. He breathes water now, so as soon as he takes his face out of the water, he starts to suffocate (to drown).

But in the flash before the realization of that sets in, he spies:

the blood trail, now evidenced by hoof-shaped blood prints. They lead across the underwater cathedral's floor, to behind what might be an altar, except it isn't really an altar at all: it's just a stone covered in greenery, in flowering branches, candles between. The candles are not burning; there's only so much air.

And here is clearly where the swords came from, shattered from, melted from; the wall behind the pool must have at least a thousand swords and axes blasted there, dripping downward; so, too, the floor nearest the pool (perhaps the pool itself was shaped of whatever blast took up these weapons and malformed them, so, sent them plunging downward) is streaked in metal.

It takes some time for Alexander to break the surface of the water, some time swimming up with the blade of his flashlight piercing the darkness of the water and leading the way. Eventually, there’s some lightening of the water around him, some slight source of light radiating down to meet his approach. He passes more swords, twisted and molten into the walls of the passage, distorted by whatever heat and force had met them at some point in the past. Finally, there’s an easing of his passage as first his hand, and then the rest of his upper body, break the surface of the water. He bobs back a little, as buoyancy finds its balance, and it gives him time to look around. There’s some light passing through the thick-thick-glass – stained glass, or was that simply the colour of the light after it had passed through the water? – but the narrow beam of light from his flashlight started to pick out details.

Alexander reaches out suddenly, losing the flashlight to roll away a little on the solid surface of the cathedral, bracing himself against the bent-blade edge of the pool that he’d surfaced in. Something clawed at his chest, something there trying to pull the breath out of him. A burning began; the burning that comes from holding your breath for too long. He slips, falling back into the water, and suddenly there’s breath again. He grasps out at the walls, for something solid to hold his position, as he gasps and breaths and settles back to normal. It was a simple thing, that assumption: that he would be able to breathe air as simply as water. And, perhaps, a lesson to this place. That precision matters.

It’s another twisting of the world that brings back his air breathing, a twist that he makes just as he breaks the water a second time. Swimming up, he uses his buoyancy to propel him up a little, enough to swing himself up and onto the edge of the pool. There he sits, retrieving the flashlight, to study the place in more detail. He shines the light across the huge window, following the line of the frames up to the small, round, open window at the very top. The light passes over the walls, over the blasted and molten weapons that had melted and flowed and fallen from their place there. Had this been some kind of armoury, some place for crusaders to prepare for war?

The light skims over the blood trail on the floor, and then skips back again as Alexander notices it there. He follows it with the flashlight, still sat on the edge of the pool as he dripped and slowly began to dry. It leads around some altar thing, its end lost behind the stonework and plant life somewhere. Levering himself up and out of the water, his free hand braced on the solid ground of the cathedral, it’s a trail that he follows.

What manner of war might crusaders prepare for in a place such as this? What manner of blast had made the swords warp, lose their shape, be frozen into stone and Hell-ward drip? What manner of place is his Mind, that this is where he comes? What is there to learn here? Does it matter, when it is away from the place he has become so familiar with? He will soon be gone for it; he does not know that quite yet. The imprisoned never knows they will be released, even when they've been told: they must feel it. Free air on their face; a decision made without any barrier.

Precision matters here. Alexander follows the trail of blood. He trails water in his wake as he follows it down, the green haze light (water pressing in at the windows, under-water ambience) all diffuse with shadow all soft, to that altar.

He spies nothing moving; certainly, nothing moving in this room, near him, just out of his line of sight - sticking ever to just beyond the periphery, surety and careful cunning and perhaps what is not seen (and what is not heard [and what is not felt]) does not exist at all. But this is a dream; nothing really exists, is that not so?

On the opposite side of the altar, he can see a great deal of blood - and it is wet, and fresh. The sweetness of it, the golden aura of it, is stronger; heady. For a moment, he might want summer, might want the bite of a strawberry on a summer's evening, might want the rapture of a firefly blinking away, the clear surety of spreading his wings and - he might even be able to have it, for a moment.

The altar has a cubby, and inside the cubby is a doll. The doll looks a little like it is supposed to be him.

Alexander

There have been changes in Alexander since his incarceration. Beyond the physical – the injuries, healed or healing – are the mental. The knowledge that he has lived before and will likely to live again. That gift from his Avatar, the flashes of previous lives, raises questions about this life. Questions for another time, surely, when there are other people to talk to about the way things work. But questions that still linger. One such question is how much those previous lives affect this one. The question of which Tradition he may belong to, is that difficult to answer because of his previous affiliation with several (all?) of them? Do those lives affect this place, something potentially created completely from his mind? Is this place a remnant of a Chorister, or some other crusader? Or is this from the crusader that this Alexander has been, is, or could be?

The trail, though, leads away from the water. There’s nothing there to pull his attention away from where it leads, so his movement is slow – cautious that the floor may be hazardous under the water that he’s trailing – but it’s not a halting thing, held back by faint noises or half-seen glimpses or some sixth sense warning. The trail leads to a pool. The spread of warm, fresh blood there isn’t something unknown, and neither is the vaguely metallic tinge to the air. It seems to be something Magickal, the way that the aura surrounding it feels. Something of the summer, something of growth; something without an obvious source. The blood must have come from somewhere (must have, right?), so where was the animal? Alexander looks back along the trail that he’s followed, wondering if this was the start of it rather than the end...

Wondering that, until the doll catches his attention. The little thing, nestled in a small space carved into the altar, pulls his gaze and his curiosity. Careful not to step in the pool of blood, he reaches an arm out towards it. There’s no contact, though. Not yet. This is feeling without touching, searching for any kind of radiance or resonance in the same way that the blood had one.

Radiance.

Funny word, that. Metal is radiant when it is hot; when it is heated, gone white with skin-melting fervor - radiant can blind; can hurt, though it seem gentle; radiant is a funny word. And the little doll is Radiant, like it would burn Alexander's shadow into the ground for people to wonder over, be frightened by, saddened by. There is no malevolence, no will to hurt, but it is a strongly magickal thing, and the magick that is attached to it is Radiant, and the Radiance is White Hot Fury, an Anger that will leave no ash. The expression sewn on its rag-doll face (for it is a doll constructed of cloth and thread) is an angry one.

There's another doll behind it, half-hidden, but he would have to touch the Alexander doll to see what this other one looked like.

This is when the monster might strike in a movie; the moment that Alexander is looking down at the doll.

This is not the moment when the monster strikes.

He can see the smears and smudges of the animal having picked up, stumbled on (this is not the beginning; this is the end), can follow those tracks too if he wants - it gets harder, but he'll turn and perhaps he'll see, behind him, new signs of the beast's passage, where he just walked mere moments before. There is a hall; a stair leading upward. Cathedrals have organs, and organs must be got to somehow.

But separate from the trail, there is movement, at last:

he can feel a knot of Dream-Alexander anticipation; a knot of it behind his ribs. He can choose to be beyond Dream-Alexander's anticipation, and go into whatever it heralds without hints and suggestions and half-memories.

Alexander

Any temptation to reach further vanishes when Alexander feels that scorching Radiance from the doll. The anger there feels unlike the bursts of his own anger in the past. Those tended to be something cold, frigidity-that-burns, rather than something that blazes. Until, at least, that time when he had Sought and Found and that anger had blazed in the dark and the rain and flared as he speared shadows. So maybe this was part of what he would become. Or, maybe, still part of what he had been. There is another doll – maybe more – tucked away, something that pulls his attention and curiosity. But, as with the lake and the door, this is something to be returned to later. (He assumes: he’d returned once, surely he could do it again.)

Again, it’s the blood that pulls him up and back and round. The trail of something hurt and hunted, now that he notices, is something that leads back and upwards. Maybe this had just been a place to rest, maybe sleep, before moving on. This creature, though, much surely be weak. Or maybe something huge, that wouldn’t notice losing so much of its own fluid on the ground.

Alexander turns once, slowly, taking in the room again and trying to commit it to memory. How much of this dream he’ll remember will remain to be seen, but there was enough retained from the last time to return to this place again. Perhaps there was a way to get back here without having to risk the cave and the water again..?

He surveys the cathedral and turns to follow the trail once again. It leads towards stairs. Alexander begins to hum quietly as he follows: the strangely familiar tune that he’d heard (been reminded of?) in another place in his mind.

He hears the faint scuffing of somebody's soles against the stone, and then just where the stairs begin, just through the arch, a shadow is thrown down; it stretches toward him.

The shadow is followed by a man. The man is in his late forties, perhaps early fifties. His hair is shot with gray, but his face is not an old man's face. He seems vital; primal, even. Lids low, lashes blonde and pale, eyes a watery gray, a sword gray. The anticipation that Alexander finds himself feeling, the knot of it suddenly snaps, tenses. He seems to remember speaking to this man before, and that it was dangerous, and that he should not be here. There is no remembered animosity, per se. If he thought about it, tried to explore his own thoughts (how much more can he explore them?), perhaps he'd remember what happened.

The man says, in tones of surprise, "Alexander, how did you get here?"

He is blocking Alexander's way, seeming by pure chance.

Alexander

The sound of shoes against the stone stair brings Alexander’s approach to a halt, a cock of his head showing the curiosity that lies behind it. He hadn’t seen or heard anyone else here, and had begun to wonder if there was anyone here. There was the possibility of hunters, but that wasn’t guaranteed. Creature attacks creature just as well as man does, although maybe for better reasons.

A slight squinting of Alexander’s eyes accompanies the tilt of his head as the man appears. There’s a familiarity there, but it’s not something that he can readily place. He certainly isn’t anyone from recent memory, and it doesn’t feel right that it’s someone from further back. Not in this life, anyway. Well, not unless they had encountered each other in an older dream and the memory had drifted away like smoke once Alexander had woken. The man seems just as surprised to see Alexander, although there is recognition there.

Alexander runs his eyes over the man quickly, checking for wounds or blood. The gray hair might have been paired with the gray of the fur..?

“I swam here. And... do I know you?” There’s a brief pause as the question is reconsidered. “Or, rather, how do I know you? It feels like I’ve forgotten who you are.” It may not be the most endearing of greetings, but it has the virtue of honesty. There’s no hidden lie there, but there is an expectation of something to nudge his memory. Perhaps it’s a reason, too, why Alexander is somewhere that he maybe shouldn’t be.

He sees no wounds and no blood.

He does see a scar across the man's throat, very, very faint, a scimitar thin line that might have come from a rope, and note that the man has a gun at his back tucked into his trousers behind the belt and that his right pocket has a dead bird in it. The small curl of claws over the pocket, just cresting, just visible; a snare. Alexander will also notice that the man has, coiled around his wrist, something that dream Alexander tells him is a whip, is a snare, can become a net; maybe it is just a dream memory that he can't quite remember, something he's being plugged back into: He knows he's seen that whip in action; the net, too.

Maybe this man is one of the hunters.

"You don't remember me? Well well. I don't know whether you are truly honest. You seem to be truly honest but seemings often lie; you and I knew that, once. We are brothers, of sorts."

Alexander

Alexander’s gaze changes a little as he takes in the other man. No, not the source of the blood. But perhaps the cause. There’s the memory of a dream, that something telling Alex that the man is dangerous. That he carries weapons and traps and knows how to use them. Likely to trap Alexander? Hard to tell, given that there’s little in the way of definite memory of the man, but Alex is still wary now. Wary of anything that could trap.

“Brothers? How so? Did we work together, somehow?” The vagueness of work allows for a variety of meanings. Hunting. Magick. Others. “I’m sorry, I still can’t quite place you. You already know my name. Would you tell me yours?”

"Ulrich." Ulrich does not seem quite right. Almost, but not quite right. There's more than just a feeling telling Alexander this, however. The cop can read a certain slyness in the man's eyes, a certain deadpan blandness which is put on. Behind it, an ace tucked away like a trick. "And we worked together," they were doing something that was the same; they did not work 'together,' however; that's another lead-astray, a not-quite-truth, something that is half-true half-lie.

"But if you remember nothing of our time together, then I don't think I should tell you. You would find it altogether too fantastical, though the fact that you have found your way here makes me wonder whether or not you are trying to trick me."

That is all true.

Alexander

“You seem an honest man, Ulrich.” This, also, a truth. The man does seem honest, at first glance. But as he’d already said, seemings can lie. And this man? This man was lying, but there wasn’t enough there to guess why or what the truth really was. The feeling that they were both doing the same thing: Hunting? Was he hunting this Ulrich?

There’s what might have been a short laugh, had recent circumstances been different, but it passes as a snort when “Ulrich” says that Alexander would find the story of their time together too fantastical. “Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that. I’ve seen things that other people would find unbelievable. Why don’t you try me? Unless I’m keeping you from something? I wouldn’t want to keep you.”

Had this been the waking world, he might have tried a small piece of Work to tell more easily if the man was lying or not. But Alexander isn’t sure of the rules of this place or whether the walls of the cell that his body is trapped in would have an effect here too. Something to try at another time, then, when there isn’t someone who strikes Alex as dangerous is stood in front of him and trying to skirt around the truth. But, then, he’d managed to change himself in quite amazing ways without too much effort – given himself wings, and the ability to breathe water. Perhaps a small push of the world to make it easier to pick up on the small details around the man.

Alexander can feel how much sharper his perceptions have grown; how much deeper, the slight edge to: everything. Colour is more vibrant; he notices more. Perhaps he has an easier time reading Ulrich, too.

"But if you insist on a re-hash, I'm happy to provide."

Grace

It's around noon when she shows up at the motel, runs into Doctor Madhouse, in his invisible van outside. Invisible, because he's totally naked and can't help it (so he says).

Whatever.

She's got her red coat on -- the one with LED strips sewn into the seams, a duffel bag slung over her shoulder. It's a grim look on her face, when she knocks on the door, but the sight of Sepúlveda had her blushing, and the redness has yet to retreat out of her face, making her look an angry, blotchy mess. Somebody spilled red paint, or butchered the application of makeup? She never wears makeup.

"Hey, Alex? It's me. It's Grace," she says. It's hard to feel the presence of him. All she can sense is the lingering Work of Sera, and some other -- a river-feeling thing. None of it Alex.

The motel is nothing special, surrounded by a great deal of nothing special. It’s somewhere to stay on the way to somewhere else, rather than being an actual desination. The place doesn’t even seem to have a name: the sign outside just reads MOTEL. A closed-down pool sits in the parking lot, waiting for better weather. A few soulless burger chains sit nearby, attracting some of the truck traffic that passes through.

The room feels mostly like Sera, although with a little something stoic and psychedelic mixed in. There’s something of the elements starting to creep in, too, but no arctic chill. There’s a knock at the door and a name called, a familiar voice. Or what would be a familiar voice, had it been heard. There’s no answer. Maybe he’s out? Asleep? Either way, there’s a window open letting the chill air of spring into the room. Music from some random, local rock radio station leaks out.

Grace

"Alex? You there?" she asks, knocks again -- louder.

Well, shit. What is she supposed to do now, with the... clothes and all?

That, and all these wrung out feelings.

She tries the door, hoping maybe it's unlocked. Maybe he doesn't feel like being behind a locked door after so long?

Alexander

Again, there’s no answer to the knock or to the call. The door, though, is unlocked and pushes open with a bit of a squeak. The gurney and body bag still sit abandoned in one corner of the room. One of the beds had obviously been slept in, blanket half-thrown off the side of it; a broken lamp sits on the little table next to it. The small kitchen has a couple of empty coffee cups sat in the sink and a well-brewed jug of coffee sat in the drip machine. Above the sound of the radio comes the sound of running water, filtering through a closed door. That feeling of some river comes flowing through the door, something without start or end. There’s no sound apart from the water and the radio, and whatever traffic noise drifts in from some nearby highway or trunk road.

Grace

She creeps into the room. This place is something, humming like it is. The noise of water from beyond a door makes her think, okay, maybe he's in the shower? But still, no sense of Alex. The door, she closes, lest some wandering passerby see a gurney and a bodybag inside the room and begin to wonder what the hell is going on in there.

Then, she lays the duffel bag on the bed, and looks around. Places like this sometimes have little notepads, don't they? She could always leave a note. Sorry to have missed you. Here's your clothes.

Alexander

The sound of running water comes to an end, and there’s a new sound coming from what it obviously the bathroom: the sound of humming. It’s not a familiar tune; certainly nothing from any kind of music chart from recent memory. There’s the sound of movement, now – the sound of a shower curtain drawing back, feet padding around on a tiled floor, a towel rail squeaking as something is pulled off it.

The door swings open, revealing an Alexander. He’s changed: there’s less of him than there had been two months ago. His hair is longer and grown out, although the scruff on his jaw has been shaved back to nothing recently. Other than some scabbed-over knuckles, he looks uninjured. And, other than a towel, he’s not wearing anything. The beige scrubs had been thrown under the slept-in bed.

“Whoa, fuck!” The surprise of someone else’s presence here hits him; the sense of recent working in the bathroom might give a hint as to where his attention had been. Alex startles, looking quickly for something to use as a weapon, when...

“...Grace?”

Grace

"Oh! Shit! Sorry, I..." she points at the duffel bag. "Clothes! For you!"

If she was still getting over the sight of Dr. Sepúlveda, this doesn't help. The pink already in her face turns to red.

"I'll uh..." a cough. She points to the door. "Yeah."

The weirdest, most uncomfortable smile ever crosses her face. "Hi."

And bye, also, because well... Obviously Alex needs to get dressed now. Can't have a conversation with him while he's holding up a towel... She trots off to the door, quickly quickly.

Alexander

Alex looks from a rapidly-reddening Grace to the duffel on the bed as she draws attention to it. “Ah, hell, I thought Kiara was coming along this evening with some clothes. I wasn’t expecting...” There’s a deeply indrawn breath, followed by a long sigh. Grace has turned towards the door, heading rapidly outwards, but he calls out before she gets a hand on the door handle. “Wait.”

The duffle is grabbed and taken back into the bathroom, the thin wooden door closing with a shove from his free hand. His voice comes through the door, “I’ve had too much damned time on my own.” There’s the sound of the bag being opened as he looks through what’s been brought for him to wear.

Grace

Too much damned time on his own, he says. That makes her pause, though she doesn't really turn back around until he's safely back in the bathroom.

"I... can understand that," she says, and goes for a chair by one of the beds.

The duffel bag has new clothes in it, everything from feet to head. Socks, shoes of three sizes (because she didn't know his), jeans (of a high-end, boutique kind, in a couple different colors) and a black sweater. All this topped by a knitted maroon beanie. Underneath everything else, there's a couple of t-shirts that seem Grace-inspired. On one, a bored-looking black cat is pawing a mug of coffee off a table, with the text "I do what I want" underneath. On another, the text "Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman, then always be Batman" dominates. Someone must have gotten sent the wrong size a time or two?

Alexander

There isn’t any more conversation while Alex is in the bathroom, although Grace might be able to hear the clothes being pulled out of the bag and looked through. A few minutes later, there’s some seconds of silence. Seconds with Alexander stood just on the other side of the bathroom door, forehead resting on it, before he heads out into the main part of the motel room. He isn’t sure how this conversation will go, any more than any of the others that are to come. Kalen, Sera, the others in the city. Would they treat him with suspicion about what he might be? Welcome him back? Only one way to find out... And, hell, it might help answer some of his own questions too.

The door opens and Alex walks back out of the bathroom, leaving the spare clothes folded and stacked on top of the duffle bag. He doesn’t move to sit, though. He starts the water in the sink, grabbing the two used – and probably only – cups to rinse them out. “You want a coffee? Or Sera has a ridiculous amount of booze stashed here.”

Stalling? Yep.

Grace

Sera's contribution makes the corners of Grace's mouth rise slightly. Why not? "Coffee with some booze in it?" she asks. Doesn't ask him how he is, because hey -- you just get broken out of prison, you're going to have feelings.

"Sera wants you to relax, I think." A pause. "Do you like the clothes? I didn't know what you'd go for, but the people at the store were helpful."

Again, not really discussing anything important.

Alexander

Alex sets the still-wet cups on the counter and pulls the jug out, giving it a sniff. The contents get thrown down the sink and the various cupboards are checked through until he finds a new filter. “I don’t know how much of this was for me, and how much is just for somewhere for Sera to run to. Or someone else to come to.“ He gestures vaguely at the walls, at the unknown resonance still lingering there.

Alex settles back to lean on the counter while coffee happens, with all of the gurgling and spitting that entails. He picked out a pair of blue jeans that are a little loose on him, along with the “I do what I want” tshirt. His feet are still bare, padding quietly on the floor of the room.

He absent-mindedly rubs his hands together, feeling the coarseness of his knuckles. “How are you, Grace?” The question is asked at the floor, or maybe his hands, but Alex does look over to her at the end.

Grace

The jeans are loose. She remembers a more solid Alex than this one, so when she tried to explain to the shopkeeper what size he was in gesture and comparison form, it came out wrong.

How is she? Well.

"Having fights with everybody," she says, smirks. "I don't know. Something about me and having opinions."

And, she's had to abandon the Office. And Ginger. And she can't be with the guy she loves. She's lacking in that usual playfulness today, despite the t-shirts. As happy as she is to see him back, she didn't really know how this meeting would go either. At least he wants to talk.

Alexander

Kiara had said something about people being mostly ok, and Grace had been one of those he’d wondered about. Grace, Kalen and Sera were the ones that he was (or, maybe, had been) closest to. But, then, the last time he and Grace had spoken hadn’t ended well, and there was the awkwardness of the party at the Chantry... “Who is everybody? I thought everybody pretty much got on ok?” An unspoken before, tagged on the end.

The filter gets towards the end of its cycle, but Alex doesn’t push off to fill the cups just yet. It needs a little more time to finish dripping first. “How bad is it really out there?”

Grace

"There's a bunch of new people in town," she says. "From New England, or somewhere up there. Where the Hermetics have declared war on the Technocracy again."

She lets that just rest for a bit, hanging in the air like a bad idea.

"Elijah found some amazing timing for telling me I treat him like shit, and getting pissed off at me because he didn't have a say in what plans were made for your retrieval -- because he wasn't at the meeting. He's called William now.

"To his credit, though, he wanted to send in an army after you. Better than some ideas people have had."

Like, for instance, just leaving him there to rot, because they were afraid.

"Right now, in Denver, there's no Mage armies patrolling the streets. Or Technocratic monsters either. It seems like they don't want a fight either."

Alexander

Now Alexander turns to the filter machine, although whether it’s because the coffee is ready, because it’s something to do, or some small way to break eye contact with Grace Is unclear. Maybe it’s all of the above. “Why did they come here? To get away from the war, or to bring it here? What did…” There’s the sound of coffee being poured, as that sentence fades to nothing. “How is Kalen?” Three small words, but a question with so many potential answers.

There’s a thunk and a hiss as the jug slides back onto its hotplate. “Well bad timing comes together just as often as we randomly bump into each other. But that doesn’t sound much like Elijah. I didn’t know him all that well, but he never seemed like the type to lead an army into battle. What happened to him?”

There’s more to say, but there’s something holding him back from giving voice to the words. “Whiskey?” Alex holds up a bottle, checking what he should pour into Grace’s coffee.

Grace

"I wish I knew what they were up to here, to be honest. Probably thinking that since Denver is a strategic target, somebody should be here to report back to the hivemind what goes on? Maybe they're here to take over the Chantry and turn this place into a pompous elitist Hermetic's idea of a paradise?"

She shifts in her chair, scratches her nose, because even she knows the look of utter disgust on her face isn't pretty. She really doesn't want to tell Alex what at least one of their ilk has said about his.

"One thing though, the ones who are here don't seem to be the type to run away from a war."

"Kalen is..." Not sleeping. Manic and beside himself. Kind of an exaggerated normal, if you know Kalen. "Well. He could be in a better mental state, but all of us could. He was very worried about you. I'm sure you knew that already," she says, huffs out a humorless laugh.

Alex asks about Elijah, and Grace responds tersely. What happened? "He joined the Order of Hermes." And apparently, that's all she needs to explain herself. "I'm being... too hard on him, I guess. He'd just found out about you, and freaked out. I lack any patience these days, though. Whiskey is a go. Very much some of that."

Alexander

Grace

[Grace isn't usually one to speak of the Order of Hermes in such a directly insulting manner, seeing as how she practically lives with a Hermetic who is decidedly not a pompous elitist. This might lead one to come to the conclusion that she has found at least one new person in Denver clinging to the worst stereotypes of Hermetic arrogance, and yes -- is quite disgusted by what she found.]

Alexander

“Hopefully they’re not of the same frame of mind as the guys who thought firing up a war between the vampires and the Union without telling us was a good idea.” There’s a weary sigh as Alex turns back to the mugs. He had only been intending to add the whiskey to Grace’s coffee, but now he adds a slug to both mugs. This was starting to look like one of those conversations. “Please say that there’s nobody else looking to poke sharp sticks either of those particular ant nests.”

That look of Grace’s is noticed and studied, but it’s obvious that the bad taste doesn’t originate from him. (Although give it a few minutes and it might originate from the coffee.) “That’s a look. What aren’t you telling me?”

The two cups are held with one hand, a finger looped through both handles, and the bottle of whiskey picked up and carried over to the bed with the other. The bottle is dropped onto the bed, freeing up a hand to pass one cup to Grace before Alex sits on the edge of the mattress.

“Yeah, I can’t imagine Kalen took it at all well. He knows that I’m out?” It’s almost a rhetorical question, but there are reasons behind it. “Kiara told me that Ginger is dead, I wasn’t sure how well the news had been passed around. If you see him before I do, tell him I’m fine.” Fine: the universal term for not good, but nothing I want to deal with right this second.

His eyebrows rise in surprise when he finds out about Elijah’s joining of the Order, the rest of his expression hidden behind the cup that he’s in the middle of taking a drink from. “I really should spend more time with the guy. Well, with everyone, really. I guess I’ve been a bit distant. I guess it’s understandable that he’d freak out if he hadn’t heard anything, though. Just… wow. William. That’ll take some getting used to.”

“I doubt the universe will care enough to provide, but hopefully things will stay quiet for long enough for you to find your patience again.”

Grace

"Like I said. I really wish I knew what all these new people in Denver were here to do," Grace says, reaches a hand out for the coffee.

He asks what that look was about, and she sighs. Grins a sardonic smile. "Like I said, I've been having fights with people. One of the new people in town is a Hermetic who's got a tree trunk shoved up her ass, and is very very proud of herself for being so proud. It doesn't bode well."

She smells the coffee. Smells the whiskey in it, leans her head back against the chair. Alex is 'fine'. He certainly seems to be doing well enough to get coffee and have a conversation, which is about eighty percent of normal human interaction. Fine is an okay place to be right now.

"Enough about me and my personal communication problems, Alex. Do you have any idea of what you'd like to do next? It's okay if you don't. I wouldn't blame you."

Alexander

“You’re not exactly selling the new neighbours. Although that does sound like the Order that Alyssa warned me about.” Alex shrugs, taking another sip of his coffee. It doesn’t bode well, but he’ll wait and make his own judgement if and when he encounters anyone who looks like they’re sitting on something uncomfortable.

He shifts up the bed, enough so that he can swing his legs up and rest back against the headrest. His fingers interlace around the cup, holding it safely on his lap. “I’m not sure.” Alex rests his head back against the wall, the ceiling with its vague nicotine stains suddenly seems to be an interesting place to look. “I think I want my life back. Assuming…” Assuming a lot, but nothing that gets immediately voiced. “Assuming that I can. I know some things need to change, though.”

Serafíne

That's when the front door of the motel room opens. Oh hey. Here's Sera.

She has a key and well, Dan has the key. They aren't sneaking up but the key and the lock and the conversation and her very, very distinctive resonance that is as soaked into the walls of this room as it is into her skin. The wards are her own, after all. So the place - at least inside - feels like her even in her absence. More: between than anything else. Liminal, that is it: some refusal of definition, as if one could choose simply to let go of labels and exist in a state of possible/flux.

"What do you think needs to change?" A flash of her dark eyes over Alex. She is: remarkably sober for a Sera.

Grace

Sera walks in. It's an event that has Grace glancing at the door, giving a salute to those entering with her coffee cup. Someone else being here is a good thing.

"He's changed," she says, smiles a bit of a genuine smile at Alex, even as he peruses the ceiling, looking for omens in the splotches of brown. "You've melted, man. Flowed downhill, too from the feel of it. I'm sure you're up to the task of changing things. That part's easy."

The booze has made her coffee a bit cooler, invites her to drink it, which she does. Chemical happiness. A poor substitute for the real thing. Alex, though, with his wanting his life back, that's something to be honestly happy about, isn't it?

Alexander

The door wasn’t even locked, unless Grace had flicked it off the latch while he had been changing. Alex turns to look at the door as it opens, just starting to free his hands from each other to push up from the bed and… And settles back again, when he sees that it’s Sera (and Dan?) coming in. The urge to get up fades as soon as it had arrived, although the thump of his heart in his chest from the surprise arrival will take a little longer to settle. There’s something of his own, changed, resonance hanging over the room in addition to Sera’s, and maybe something of Jim’s. Some remnant of recent Work lingering.

What do you think needs to change?

“Mostly, me.” Grace says that he’s changed, and he nods, shrugs, meeting her eyes as he does. “I guess I figured some stuff out. Like how pushing everyone away isn’t good for me.” He nudges the bottle of whiskey with a foot, pushing it towards the side of the bed closest to the door.

Serafíne

Here is Sera, and Dan of course, sliding in behind her, a solid, tattooed hand on the creature's narrow should. That impression one has of her: the sudden, dirty glamour of her presence. Golden curls and a battered leather jacket. Sunglasses even (especially) in the cheap no-tell motel room where she once spent three days hiding out from: everyone. Everywhere, ashes in the back of her throat.

This glance for Grace, as she speaks. The dark glasses, the dark eyes. The sense of: attention, of awareness, of consideration. Neat little kink of a smile responsive to Grace's own. Then Alex.

"Not an easy thing to learn," Sera, quiet. The supple, blooming grace of her smile beneath the gleam of the dark glasses. "I'm glad we have you back so you can figure it out, though."

--

Does she notice: his jumpiness? His awareness. She must. She sees so much. Feels so much. Has been through: so much that she must recognize that moment of startement, movement, surge. Perhaps feels some resonance answer to it, somewhere in her body. Somewhere beneath her ribs, in her viscera. Somewhere.

"We brought you some clothes and shit. Some cash. A new phone." Dan hefts a reuseable shopping bag and sets it down on the bed nearest Alexander. He inserts: "Have a few other errands to run but we can come back later, if you want company. Or not, if you don't."

They'll hang around for another few minutes, but soon enough Dan reminds Sera that it is time to go.

Grace

Grace nods at Alexander, agreeing with him rather wholeheartedly. It's something she'd wanted to chew him out for the last time they'd met. He'd tried to isolate himself in order to protect everyone else, when that doesn't even stand a chance of working. But he'd kicked her out before she could get to that point.

He'll want company. She'll want to call Kalen and tell him to get his ass here, because Alex is just done with solitary anything, and as far as she can tell, doesn't blame anyone for what happened. Except, maybe...

"You didn't do anything to cause this to happen, you know? That's all on the idiot who thought it would be a great idea to kidnap you. Having pushed people away doesn't make you responsible for what happened," she says, gulps some coffee.

"Kalen blames himself, I think. Keeps kicking himself for going on vacation. That is about as ridiculous an idea as you blaming yourself, you know?"

Alexander

Sera’s is a flying visit, but he does manage to give her – and Dan - a small smile and some thanks for bringing along some more bits and pieces for him. Money, which at least gives him some additional freedom to get out and around the city if – when – he chooses.

After they leave, though, he does ask Grace, “Is she ok? She seems…different.” Simply a case of two months away, making her seem that way? The pressure of his situation? Something else? Either way…

“I know. This was…” Again, there’s a pause where there should be words. Something held back. He shakes his head, a frustrated little movement. “I know. And it wasn’t your fault, either. I know we didn’t exactly part on the best of terms, but I get that it was a mistake. One that that woman didn’t do anything to clear up. Did you know she came to my place to…I’d say apologise, but she wasn’t in the least bit apologetic. To be honest, I don’t actually know why she even bothered. But, anyway, I believe the term is ‘shit happens’. Which is most definitely has, and will undoubtedly do again.”

There’s a snort and another shaking of the head, although this one comes with a shadow of a fond little smile. “Throw something at him for me, will you?”

Grace

Grace nods into her coffee, when he says that their last altercation had been due to a mistake. "I thought maybe... I didn't know how you'd react to my coming by, at first."

She drinks some more, lets it warm her. "I'm glad you aren't still pissed off about that."

"But um, what's different about Sera? "

Alexander

“We all screw up sometimes. I was pissed at the time, but I got over it. And, honestly, I do think it was more aimed at Ihsan than you. She was enjoying her little game way too much to care.” Alex shifts again, bending a knee and tucking one leg under the other. “Besides, I have other things to be pissed about.” Another drink of the coffee, a thought of whether it should be refilled with more coffee or more whiskey.

“She just seemed strangely sober. She isn’t on her purification thing at the moment, is she?”

Grace

"Well. You know Sera. If she were on something all the time, that would be too predictable," Grace says, drinks more coffee with a smile.

"I'm glad that you want to rebuild your life. Among choices, it is a good one. And you know I'll do everything in my power to help you with that."

Welcome back

Kiara Woolfe

So, here is our scene: it's a motel room. The curtains are mostly drawn but for a gap where they don't quite meet in the middle, a chink where the light spills across the gap between two double beds. Alexander is laid out on one, the other has rumpled sheets as if it had been slept in but its occupants had long since left.

The room smelled faintly the way motels do, like old smoke and detergent and too much starch on the bed sheets. An old TV set in the corner, a fridge and kitchenette, a bathroom with the door half opened and towels on the floor. At some point in the last few hours, somebody had showered. The room clung to the stronger aroma of motel shampoos.

Those ridiculously small, cheap bottles.

What else is felt is: resonance. Serafine's lingers in the walls here and another, too. Fainter, traces of something stoic, psychedelic (Jim). Alexander's rescuers had no idea why Serafine chose this place, why she has a room paid up in cash here - perhaps Alexander does, perhaps he knew the Awakened that would come out here to the outskirts, with nothing but drive through chains and semi trailers in the parking lot.

-

It's late, middling to early, the light that trickles through the window is faint and pale gold. The sort dawn offers. Outside the snow has stopped falling for a moment but there's a crispness to the air; it's cold enough that the figure sleeping in a chair across the room has a blanket curled around her.

That Alexander's still form had been likewise covered.

There's a gurney pushed against a far wall; a black bag (a body bag?) folded over it. A medical kit on the table beside the sleeping woman in the chair.

And her: rejuvenation. Pulsing energy.

-

Wherever Alexander was now, it felt miles from a sterile room in a Union facility.

Alexander is slow to wake. It’s not the first time in recent memory that he’s climbed out of a drug-induced unconsciousness, although this one was maybe deeper – harder to pull away from. For all intents and purposes, he had been dead to anyone who saw him. Oh, he had been warned that there were plans for his release. But he had thought there would have been some kind of warning when it finally came down to it. Some drug slipped into his cell for him to swallow, waiting for him to finally commit to whatever plan had been put together. But those thoughts were a long way away, just at this moment.

He had been resting on his cot, meditating and daydreaming as his endless amounts of free had allowed him to do, searching for some kind of freedom.

Now, as consciousness approaches in fits and starts, it’s the sounds of the room that come to notice first. The hum of the fridge, the banging of the pipes from the next room over. Some vague rumbling, maybe a nearby highway and the flow of traffic along its asphalt surface. They’re ordinary, mundane, run-of-the-mill sounds. But they seem important. Why are they important?

Alexander dips back into unconsciousness again for some amount of time. How long? Who the hell knows, he’s lost track of so much over the past months. But it is a dip, and the curve back up into wakefulness bends a little higher. This time, there’s more sensation. There’s something familiar about the beige scrubs he still wears, but the feel of the mattress under him and the blanket over...

He finally tries opening his eyes. The light is, thankfully, dim. The light passing through the curtains, an occasional ray of light passing through the chink in the curtains from a nearby neon sign, it isn’t a shock. Alexander lies motionless, just staring at the curtains. Thought still feels a little disconnected from body, but it’s slowly coming together...

Memory comes slamming back, and it’s almost a physical thing. The meeting at his station, his brief waking only to be shot down again... the repeated counselling, the invasion of his mind...

There’s a moment of panic when he thinks that this might all be some sort of game. (Still might be!) A moment which pushes him up from the bed, pushing the blanket back which bangs against a lamp on the bedside table and knocks it crashing to the floor. A moment where he almost rushes for the door, breaking for freedom. He isn’t completely lost to the panic, though. The window, the crack in the curtains, is enough for right now. Rather than the door, it’s the rest of the way to the window that Alexander rushes. He stands there, pulling the curtains back to look out at the world. Breath catches in his throat, and he doesn’t realise that he’s holding it.

Kiara Woolfe

The lamp crashing to the floor startles the woman in the chair to wakefulness. She'd been dozing, rather fitfully, for the last few hours. She doesn't make any sudden movements, the brunette, but rather watches with a half frozen sort of tension as the Orphan rushes to the window.

Drags the curtains back.

Sees: a Jack in the Box. Semi trailers and trucks and what must have passed for a swimming pool attached to the motel when the weather was warmer. Now, the tarp was covered in a fine layer of snow. The fence around it had a sign that declared it was closed for the winter. The world outside this room seemed: normal. Utterly unchanged. Cars speeding by and the low buzz of a TV in the next room over; footsteps banging overhead.

There's a rustle of clothing and the brunette in the armchair sits forward. The blanket sliding off her shoulders, revealing scrubs not so different to the ones Alexander found himself still wearing - the last vestiges of the disguise Kiara had adopted to rescue the Orphan.

"Welcome back."

There are dark circles beneath the Verbena's eyes; her hair a wild tangle around her features. She looks: drained, the pagan. But alert. If she's some hallucination, if this all was some new trick to beguile him into believing what was happening: it felt very real.

Down to the stale coffee resting on the table beside Kiara. "You're okay, Alexander. We got you out. This place is safe. They can't find us here."

A beat: "How do you feel?"

Alexander Brandt

[WP, same reasons]

Alexander Brandt

The window reveals that little corner of the world, with its ordinary burger joint and its ordinary trucks and ordinary trailers and its ordinary weather and it’s all perfectly ordinary and mundane. The sky – god, the sky, the sight of the dawn above this shithole town somewhere on the outskirts of the city... If he hadn’t been holding his breath, still hasn’t realised that he has, it would have caught then. Both hands resting on the glass, Alexander rests his forehead on the glass and just looks out.

Looks out, at least, until there’s a sound from behind him. Something soft that, the movement of clothing and the slip of a blanket, but from Alexander’s reaction it would seem like something closer to a gunshot. He turns, swinging round on the spot, to place the noise. There’s someone there, a figure dressed in scrubs. The same scrubs he’d seen after waking the second time, surrounded by guards with a medic disconnecting him from a fluid drip. There’s tension in his frame, something wild and uncaged and ready to spring. For Kiara, or for freedom. Fight or flight.

Welcome back.

There’s some familiarity that halts him. Some part of his unconscious or subconscious or some other part of him buried beyond his control. This isn’t some faceless medic, some unknown person sent to repair or monitor or... There was a familiarity in the voice and the movement, in the resonance coming from her and, hell, even from the resonance woven into the walls of the room. It was all familiar, and it did feel real.

So Alexander doesn’t charge her, doesn’t leap for the door. There is an exhalation, heavy and sharp, as his body’s need to breathe finally wins out and as it starts to really register through the dregs of whatever substance had been running through his body. The tension is still there, he’s still prepared, but there’s pause as his eyes dart from her face to the surroundings. The gurney and the body bag...

“I know you.” Consideration begins to slip into his eyes, pupils wide and eating in the light. Alexander hadn’t had a massive amount of contact with Kiara, but there had been some. “Horse. Right?” The tension slips a little more, although the movement of his shoulders gets a little more rapid. There’s a break in the eye contact as Alexander looks around the room, checking the parts that he hadn’t noticed in the moments since waking, before meeting her gaze again.

“I...” A simple question, asking how he feels. Four simple words. The answer, not as simple. “...don’t know.” There’s another break in the eye contact, a studied look down at his hands, which he bunches into fists to check the old scabs on the knuckles.

Kiara Woolfe

I know you.

Kiara's dark eyes rove his features, there's a sort of captured tension to the way they do, her body poised there on the edge of the armchair.

Horse, right?

There's a flicker of some quiet release there; a loosening of tension around her mouth; drawn into furrows across her brow. "Right." A smile edges across the female's lips and she rises from the chair, turning to idly fold the blanket over the arm. The pagan's clothing is faintly rumpled and her hair is perhaps a little longer since the last occasion they'd had to meet.

He doesn't know how he feels. Kiara seems to have been expecting about as much, when she straightens and turns back to face him, her expression reads a clear amount of empathy (perhaps too, this was another reason it was her here, now, when he awoke and not her partner in crime for this rescue).

The healer had, among her virtues (depending on who you asked), a good dose of bedside manner.

He's examining the old wounds on his knuckles. Kiara's eyes drop to them, she makes some quiet noise, a hm of recognition. "Right. Your knuckles. We didn't heal them for you. We could have, but - I figured once we knew you were okay, it was better to let you sleep off the drugs in your system."

Softer. "They dosed you up pretty well." Tinged with anger, though. There's a tremor of it that twinges at the edges of Kiara's words. She pushes the fall of her hair over her face. Moves toward the tiny kitchenette and detaches a coffee pot, holds it under the sink and begins to fill it up. Continues to speak, too, as if her voice could fill up the voids in his memory, could coax his lingering uncertainty out and replace it with something rooted in memory; strengthened with familiarity.

"Are you hungry? Serafine set all of this up. There's coffee and - " Kiara sets the pot on, turns and leans into the sink for support. "A lot of alcohol, shockingly." A brief smile. A thread of something perhaps he can catch hold of.

Serafine. Her propensity for everything in abundance. Stocking this room up with what was needed by her estimations. "We weren't absolutely sure how long you'd be out but I wanted to be sure someone was here when you woke up. In case you had questions ... " Kiara's eyes tick back to him.

Alexander Brandt

Kiara begins to move around, to tidy a little, as Alexander studies his hands. Nothing had changed, they had been slowly healing since... They had been slowly healing. As the body does, repairing itself after damage.

We didn’t heal them for you.

It was no small thing to twist the world to fix the body, he’d seen it often enough to know that it was possible. But these wounds were small and already well on their way to healing. He rubs his hands absent-mindedly as he turns back to the window. The room is cool, given the weather outside and the cheap way the place had been put together, but he still opens the window. Enough to let the cold air flow through and into the room, and it’s a moment that brings Alexander’s eyes closed again. Another simple thing, another ordinary sensation, but one that he hadn’t felt in months.

They dosed you up pretty well.

There’s a pause, there. They’re facing away from each other – him towards the window, her towards some part of the kitchen. Alexander’s mouth opens, taking a breath as if to speak, but no words follow. The breath turns into a sigh, and it seems that her words go unremarked.

They had both changed since their last encounter in the park. Her hair had grown a little, and so had his. The scruff around his jawline had grown a little – it hadn’t been shaved back too long ago – and his hair had grown out. A fringe draped down, tucked back behind his ears where it would reach. But, more noticeable, was how much less of his there was than before. He had been fairly solid, could have been an imposing figure if he put his mind to it. But he’d lost weight, that much was obvious under the scrubs. Alexander turns at the question about whether he’s hungry, and he turns towards the little kitchen. Resting back on the sill of the window – still content to feel the bracing cold breeze blow over his back – there’s another pause. Another flash of wariness, but it’s something that subsides again quickly. She attempts a little humour, but it doesn’t get a reaction from him. Too soon, maybe.

“Yeah, I’m hungry.” There’s a glance down at the floor, maybe something unvoiced, before a question does surface. “How is... everyone?”

Kiara Woolfe

Perhaps it will seem strange to him, once he's had time to process everything that happened. To hear the story told from varying angles. The rescue. The risks taken. Perhaps the reality that Andrés and Kiara had offered to be the ones to go in and reclaim him. At least, as far as the latter went, there seemed no good reason why she'd have done it.

Put herself into a situation like that for a man she barely knew. Knew enough, maybe. Trusted not to be her enemy.

Maybe it will be enough to convince him that whatever side of whatever sort of war they might have been dragged into fighting, the brunette standing across from him is on the same side. Maybe it will, but - it's too soon for that. The edges are too raw, bruised and tender and sharp-pressed upon.

Her attempt at banter passes over him and she doesn't, for what it's worth, press the issue. Seem offended. Merely waits for a beat, studying him with those fathomless eyes of hers before they too pass away and she nods, once. Breathes out sharply.

Decisively. He was hungry. Appetite was a good sign.

She turns toward the refrigerator and pulls the door open, there's some rummaging around inside; the rustle of a plastic bag and then a small plastic container comes out. One of those take away sandwich kinds with pre-cut triangles of bread inside. There's a handful of candy bars in the Verbena's other hand and she sets it all down for a beat: opens the container and studies the neat little prepackaged triangles.

Turkey and rye and who knew what.

How is ... everyone?

All he can see when he asks is Kiara's back; the set of her shoulders, the line of her neck. Can sense the pause, though. Can likely see it, the way you can sometimes. The natural consideration of a complicated answer: "Everyone is okay. Mostly." She turns with the container in hand, carries it over to him. Some twist of humor when she says: "I can't vouch for the nutritional value in that."

Alexander works for the Department, he's likely seen worse.

"Worried about you, but - they're good. You can ask them yourself soon enough." She folds her hands into the pockets of the scrubs. Hooks her thumbs at the edges. "This motel room is warded, you can stay here as long as you like. If you need time to process everything. I sent word out last night that we had you."

She frowns down at the worn carpet. "We'll probably have to get everyone together, figure out what comes next. But - " She lifts her eyes, gestures at the sandwich. "You should eat. Regain your strength."

The world, with all of its boring mundanity seems somewhat surreal. Unreal. Not quite as remembered, maybe. But it’s something that Alexander seems to cling to, right now. The simple sensation of flowing air, of the cold – he’s shivering now, but he doesn’t make any move to close the window or grab a blanket to cover himself more – is important. Not wonderful, although that might be debatable at another time, but certainly grounding. Little anchors that hold him in place. In this place.

Kiara works in the kitchen, putting coffee on to brew and fishing through the kitchen for something vaguely edible and nutritious. Alexander has turned back to the window, looking out of it without really seeing much of anything. He focuses on the sensation, the flow of air around him. It’s a tool to clear the mind, as much as clearing the mind is a tool for something else. There’s one way that Alexander has changed, and it’s one that might not have been noted too strongly by Kiara so far. It didn’t seem to be any surprise, though – there had been no suspicion that he wasn’t who they (he?) thought that he was. But that sensation of things being Frozen was no longer there. No slivers of a moment hanging in the air. No glacier in the mountains.

No, the glacier had melted. As Alexander reaches for the first time in way too long, there’s a feeling of reality rearranging itself slightly as his Will pushes against it. Somewhere alongside the pulsing, rejuvenating landscape of Kiara’s presence, there runs a river. Something intrinsically elemental and moving and changing and Flowing and ultimately Boundless. Without beginning. Without end. Alexander reaches out, no longer confined by the perfected work of the Union lining the walls and sucking any trace of dynamism and change out of the air. He reaches out into the flow of Time and stands there, motionless, as he lets it wash over him. He had been without a specific time for so long. There had been some hints, towards the end, but now... Now he knew exactly when he was. Another anchor cast out.

Alexander stands there motionless, as Kiara gathers her words and begins to speak. The Work, standing in that flow of Time, is almost overwhelming after so long. The connection, right now, seemed so much stronger than it had before. Not, exactly, as if he had more control over it. More... More like that very first day awake, when everything had seemed to have a little more colour to it, and a little more depth.

He is listening, though, and feels her approach. She might notice the shivering, now, the hairs standing up on his bare arms to trap what heat they can there. Alexander sounds almost distracted – he is distracted – but asks, “Mostly?” He can imagine who wouldn’t be ok. Kalen, probably. Kalen, ready to tear the world apart. And Grace? The last time they had spoken, they hadn’t parted on the best of terms. Now, at least, there was the chance to put that right.

Kiara holds the sandwich out, and a few moments after Alexander notices and turns. There’s an attempt at a smile, something grateful, but it’s forced. Something habitual, but not quite empty inside. The plastic wrapper is taken and one of the triangles pulled out. Half of it disappears into his mouth, and he turns again to look out of the window as he chews.

There’s a pause, between mouthfuls. “What comes next?” There’s another pause, mouth open ready to speak, but the thought is gone again. Another comes. “Do I just get on back to my life?” The rest of the triangle hangs in air, held part way to Alexander’s mouth.

The Verbena's sensitivity to the energies, to the base elements that made up the Tapestry; wove magicks together has grown stronger over the last several months.

The pagan's affinity for Primal workings have left the traces of her presence as a far more potent thing. The sense of Kiara, the wash of her essence is palatable. They often said it, about those Awakened who trained in the use and manipulation of Quintessential energies - that they began to radiate that very sense of Otherness that separated them from the Sleepers around them.

It had already been there, about the earth witch. That particular sensation she brought with her into a room. The way she stirred the hackles of a neighborhood dog being walked. The turn of those dark eyes of hers toward you.

The curl of blood red lips.

Now, it simply felt a little clearer, she would need to work a little harder to mask herself from those who would be drawn to it (her). Alexander's presence has grown stronger, too. The sense and shape of his Working as it flows out and cascades over the motel room; the tendrils of his casting. The Verbena's head tilts just so.

The hairs on her arms rising.

She moves away, after a moment, fetches two cups of steaming coffee. Makes some brief apology about the lack of milk. She holds her cup between her palms and blows on it to cool the contents before she takes a tip; swallowing and glancing at the Orphan as he asks a question.

The question, really.

There's some flash of empathy, perhaps even pity, there before she replies. Eyes on her coffee, on the heat rising from it. "Do you think you'd be able to? Just - go back to everything. I may hate everything they stand for, but - the Union isn't dumb. They'll figure out what we did, the question is: what will they do about it?

The Police Station, your apartment. They probably aren't safe right now." Kiara's eyes find his. "Ginger's gone. Grace confirmed it. She's covering what needs to be covered, but - anything we had linked to it, has to go.

I'm not going to pretend I have all the answers. We got you out. That was what mattered. Whatever happens next, whatever we have to do. We'll figure it out. For now - " The Verbena breathes out sharply, sets her coffee cup down behind her. "I think you should stay here. At least until I can contact the others. Bring them here.

We can decide what needs to be done." The Verbana reaches out, tentatively, to set a hand on Alexander's arm. Wordless comfort, perhaps, if allowed.

Alexander’s push against reality went a little further than he’d hoped. It was intended to be a momentary thing, something grounding. The effect lingers, though, the feeling of tide and flow and change clinging on for a while longer. It’s a reassuring presence in the background. Like some sort of supernatural comfort blanket.

Coffee is brought over, with a comment about the lack of milk. It’s something that is waved off, unimportant. Even if he had been a stranger to black coffee, this isn’t important. It isn’t a problem. The plastic packet with its single remaining triangle of industrially-produced sandwich is set on the sill, freeing his hands up to take the cup from Kiara when it’s offered. The steam rises, curling in the cold draft, and it’s something Alexander watches before taking a sip from it. It’s something else, something simple, that grabs his attention.

Another pause, as steam rises and time flows and the life of the city continues outside the small motel room. It’s time to think, to arrange words into something resembling order; time to find something to say that won’t catch. His reply to the question: “Maybe.” There’s doubt in his voice, but there isn’t an automatic rejection of the possibility. Maybe it was something he could regain: that ordinary part of his life, that something that grounded him. As to what they will do? There’s silence there. A second, two, three and then simply: a shrug.

Kiara tells him that his place, his work, aren’t likely to be safe. Another shrug. Ginger is no more, and that gets a curious look. But, again, nothing more. There’s nothing more to be said.

Alexander shows some doubt when Kiara says that he should stay here. There’s a flash of something feral, there; a flash of something that doesn’t – won’t be – caged. One set of walls won’t be swapped for another; one jailer for another. This isn’t an instruction, though – something with threat and force behind it – but just a suggestion. He gives a brief nod as Kiara suggests bringing others here. It’s probably safer, for the moment. At least until certain things are a little clearer in his mind. Certain, large questions that have yet to be asked, let alone answered. He does make a request, though. Clothes. Something he can wear, maybe so these fucking things can be burned.

There’s a touch at his arm, and it draws out another intake of breath. How long since a touch had been anything other than... The breath is shuddering, stuttering, as it draws in. His cup of coffee is clumsily set on the sill, knocking the plastic container and making it fall on its side. And then?

And then Alexander turns and wraps his arms around her and, eyes closed and clinging onto her as if she were the last person alive, he remembers a fragment of a conversation.

We need other people to be better people.

Kiara Woolfe

There were questions that still needed answers.

Questions for Alexander that he'd have to find answers for, search his memory for about the facility he'd been taken to; the interrogations and conditioning they'd subjected him to. There would be questions he needed answers for, too. From them. Questions that, right now, the Verbena who stands across from him with her warm dark eyes and gentle touches cannot answer for him.

There were, after all, reassurances that weren't hers to give.

No matter how badly she wishes she could.

Kiara Woolfe was a healer, by calling as much as trade. Fixing and mending what was broken was what she did and she did it, often, without any pretension of gratitude being returned her way. Didn't always expect or necessarily need it. She believed, the pagan, wholeheartedly in the righteousness of the Cycle. In what was natural and needed and balanced in the universe. Life was not made to be lived without risk, without bruising and tearing.

Humanity would never be a creature without flaw. That was the infinite value and heartbreak of them.

And they were, at their core: not so removed from humanity, these Awakened, that they did not break and bend just as surely.

Alexander wraps his arms around her and there is a moment of surprise; a quiet expression; a small, startled noise that rises in the brunette's throat before her arms curl around the Orphan. Before she slides her palms over his back and there's a flood of soothing energy, after a beat. Kiara's touch seeping beneath the scrubs he wears; infusing his bones and muscles and skin with a tingling; spreading warmth.

Soon enough, the chill he'd felt is forgotten.

"It's okay." She murmurs into his shoulder. And, at least in the moment, it's easier to believe it may be. "It's going to be okay."
