Because you feel fierce

Ian

Washington Park was alive with the deep, vibrant green of late spring. Today the effect of it was somewhat incongruous with the weather, as winter's icy breath gave one last exhale - a reminder of nature's unpredictability. At 41 degrees, the air was cold enough to warrant a coat. The breeze that gusted over the landscape had a sharp bite to it. Most of the afternoon visitors cleared out when the rain started, but the precipitation never exceeded more than a light drizzle. Now it was more of a mist than anything - the kind that beaded up and left little pin-drops of water on your skin and clothes.

Ian rarely let things like cold or rain deter him from his daily routine. Recently, even less so. He'd been running, but now he was pacing quietly through the grass, hands in the pockets of his dark windbreaker as his breath plumed little clouds in the mist. His hair was wet. So were his shoes. The wetness made the cold more noticeable, but his core temperature was still up from his run. Looking out over the sleepy landscape, Ian pondered the way the deep green of the grass contrasted against the grey and darkening sky. Someone else might have called it dreary, but for him there was something meditative about it.

Elijah

Elijah Poirot lived a very loud life.

When he woke up, there was a warning. When he woke up and when he Woke Up he had an imperative imparted to him. A command, a reminder- live, live- for tomorrow you die and all begins anew. He heard the wisdom between the walls, of something that was restrained because there was something between Elijah and a truer part of himself. It was telling that, for a long time, he had no desire to see what lived behind that wall. Any wall. There was a memory, a dream, something that left the smell of sulfur in his nose and the feeling of something ancient and terrible in his mind. There was a man like an ocean and a woman who felt like the end of all things (a fact Elijah learned to take as comfort- Elijah missed Eleanor.) There had been a warning he knew in his heart- there were consequences for selling your soul. There were consequences for asking for eternity.

We digress.

Elijah lived a life that was loud, a warning from his avatar (a very different being living behind the walls and barriers and bullshit that Elijah built) to the dead. To talking. To the constant sound and hum of something that was just beyond his reach. Well, maybe not beyond his reach anymore. He's learned that it's hard to push past those walls, to touch the seemingly intangible spaces between the worlds. He tried it anyway, but did not meddle. He learned that there were consequences, and consequences that should not be ignored. But there were the dead. They were always around, sometimes distraught. Sometimes wailing, sometimes battling their inner demons for control and he heard all of it. He heard every blessed moment of it, whether his ears were meant to hear them or not. There was a reason people drank to forget; there are things mortals aren't meant to here.

And still, he stayed alert, awake, focused for now to pay attention to the physical instead of the land between. He was moving to find that silence, that nice moment where the world shuts down and he's nothing but a body because there is no difference between him and the rest of the world. He doesn't run often, but Jenn had harped on him about omniscience and perfection. Perfect mind was nothing without paying attention to your body, and vice versa. We are not parts, but a whole. So there he was, hands in a beat up leather jacket and wearing a pair of hiking boots that were intended to keep the water out. Jeans and a tee shirt, something white and V necked that started to get a little wet in the front, like he was going to be a last place finisher in a wet t-shirt contest if he wasn't careful.

He did not smell sulfur in his nose, did not pick up unmistakable, ageless evil. Just wet grass and cold air and a slow, pounding pulse . His attention went to the distance, to nearby water and the feeling that maybe... maybe it was time to be less afraid. Maybe it was time to push past something, to move, to transcend. To be more because he could be more.

For now, though, the young man was dressed comfortably and seemed to have no problem reveling in cold and searching for silence, only to hear the rhythmic pounding of someone's feet on a run. The water on a bench. [the quiet keening of something long dead by the lake, weeping into hands, breath useless but shuddering 'oh, Richard'. The taunting of something terrible. He doesn't approach the lake for a reason.]

He turned, looking for the sound the running, the source. He waits, grin on his face like he was the only spectator of a one man marathon.

A figure moved nearby. Ian surveyed the lake in the near distance, but did not make any motion to approach. Instead his eyes fixed on Elijah's profile. He watched him move for a time, the way that people sometimes watched animals (or animals sometimes watched people,) finding a simple fascination in the rhythm of his gait and the slope of his posture.

He knew who it was. Even at a distance, with details obscured by mist and low light. He felt Elijah in the air. Recognized him by the way he moved. Almost imagined for a moment that he could smell him, but that was probably a sense memory.

Gradually he closed the distance between them, moving at a relaxed gait. His steps were fluid and quiet, muffled against the wet grass. When he neared Elijah, he stopped and tilted his head, a subtle expression of familiarity showing on his features. He didn't speak just yet. Maybe he'd forgotten for a moment that he was supposed to.

Elijah knew Ian. Had felt the presence of his resonance many times now. But tonight there was something new there - deeper, stronger, more visceral. It mingled with his cunning elegance and that ever-present echo of the feline predator that lurked beneath his skin. He didn't so much feel changed as more... himself, as though inhabiting his nature more fully. He felt altogether more Primal now.

Arionna de la Babin

The gods are warring.

This is a simple truth that people like Arionna understand. The gods are warring, and we know this to be true because the cycles are shifting. Where once the gods of the night fought bravely, stealing more of mortal time for themselves, now they are growing tired and those of the light are pushing them back. It's a war that will go on until the end of time, as neither can live without the other.

It is during this time that those of the night feel most vulnerable. The cold has shifted away from them, the nights grow shorter, and their strength...their strength becomes difficult to maintain. It's hard to wander among people during the time one is most vulnerable; you feel...like prey. Thus it is that when these times come, those of the eve shall step forward and take what little night they have available, and use it shamelessly. They will not yield; they will endure.

She ought to be at home, certainly. But this is her time, and she will not give it up. Her time. It is what she has for herself, if only for a moment. While it is not entirely safe for someone such as her to be wandering the dark park, she does it anyway, utilizing what scorn she may have as a shield against the suspicious.

She can feel them at the edges of her own wind; at the edges of winter and sorrow. Elijah. Ian. Though there is a difference amongst them, one she does not know, and she can only wonder if there is someone new. Wonderful. It's all she needs. Another groupie. Or perhaps she is mistaken. Thus enters curiosity.

Arionna follows the sensation, her footsteps light and careful. She is no master of the shadows or silence, but she has learned something of her time of running and hiding. From the path she moves towards these feelings, her boots sinking into the earth softly with each step.

Alexander

[Int+Med?]

Dice: 3 d10 TN6 (3, 4, 7) ( success x 1 )

Elijah

There was movement.

There was a lake in the distance, crying on the other side, a wailing, keening something but he wasn't listening to that. He was listening to footsteps, feeling something altogether familiar but more. So much more than what he was familiar with. It felt right. It opened up questions and there he was, wet with the rain and feeling like... like...

His attention turned, not quite prey but certainly not a predator and awed by the grace of those who were with him. There was a feeling about Ian, something Elijah always expected but what came to life. His eyes are alight, green and amber and he bridges the gap.

Green and amber and focused and there was a second when he was there, steps away, there- but a breath away. His hands come up, cupping cheeks, pulling in, coming closer and pressing his lips to Ian's like it was the only thing he could have ever thought of doing. Not an impulse, but an imperative- exactly what he inteded for it to be. Lips against his, heart beating loud and there is a reckless abandon in the movement. Something fevered and intent and warm- even if his fingertips are cold.

He doesn't say a word.

Alexander

There are others in the city who are regular visitors to the park, although their reasons for being there vary. Some come for exercise. Some come to be sociable. Others come because they just fucking feel like it walking over the grass in heels. Others come to wait.

Alexander, depending on the day, can slip into several of those categories. He runs here, has played soccer and Frisbee here. But today the reason is to wait, in the hope of meeting someone once again. Someone met here twice before, so the hope is that there will be a third time here too. And so he sits and he waits and he watches without really seeing. The city moves along at its own pace around the park, and the park continues in its own patterns around him. Alexander sits on a bench near the lake, lost within himself. The pattern of the drizzle provided a base for meditation and, so far, there hasn’t been much reason for it to come to an end. He sits, frozen apart from the slow rise and fall of his chest. His clothes – jackets, combats, boots – are wet, but that little fact is either unnoticed or not really important.

And so it’s easy for him to miss the not-so-familiar resonances moving around nearby. Just as much as it’s easy for his own to fade into the cold of the park.

Ian

The kiss probably shouldn't have surprised him, but it did - a little. Maybe because neither of them had ever kissed to say hello before. They hadn't really kissed all that often, actually. And then... usually as a prelude or an accompaniment to other kinds of physical intimacy. So Elijah kissed him, and he did not immediately react apart from the instinctive softening of his lips. But still, he gave no objection, and after a couple of heartbeats he let his eyes close and exhaled gently against Elijah's mouth - kissed him back a little more assertively, then pulled away with a little smile.

"Good time for a walk, hmm?"

It wasn't, but they were out here anyway. Ian's eyes shifted toward the nearby trees. The muted light in the sky was disappearing behind Denver's horizon, drawing on toward night. Toward darkness. Soon the park lights would switch on, but right now the trees were mostly in shadow. It would be easy to slip through them unnoticed, but Arionna's passage did not quite manage to escape Ian's attention. He caught her movement in his gaze, hovering there a moment before his focus shifted to the nearby lakeshore. The bench (Alexander.) And back to Elijah again.

Arionna de la Babin

Another like her. The end state of her process. She feels him too now. Three that she knows. Three that she is familiar with. Thankfully, these are not three that she greatly dislikes.

She walks through the trees, curling her dark arms into her chest momentarily when a bit of cold seeps through her sweater. Despite how it feels, she misses it already; misses the deep cold and the dead trees. She sees them, their moment of affection, and she knows all too well that what she feels is not the way a person ought to. It's not Elijah or Ian's fault, and perhaps for once she understands that. Still...

Arionna watches them for a moment, pressing her palm against a tree as if it will provide some sort of support. Then she steps away from it slowly, and moves from the trunk. She tries to be quiet. Tries to go unnoticed, because there is another. One she is likely to approach, and to feel comfortable with.

Elijah

Elijah

There's that little smile, and Elijah can't get the grin off his face. Ever so pleased, like that was exactly what he wanted to do, grinning like he had made some great discovery (grinning like he stared down a tiger and lived to tell the tale). There is a moment, a moment where that grin is both pleased and a little cautious- aware that there is an edge he can ride and delighting in the fact that there is something new.

Good time for a walk?
"No kidding, right?" he said, hands go into his pockets (fiddle with the pocket watch on his left) "would you think me too Beyonce if I called you fierce? Because you feel fierce... like base instinct."

It went without saying, indicated in tone and the look in his eyes that he very heartily approved. He liked it, to say the least.

His attentions do move, though, since his senses are awake and alert and the cold keeps him sharp. Sees a man on the bench- Alexander, maybe? And someone by the trees- Elijah smiles, takes a hand out of his pocket and gives a little wave. All good natured, unaware that his actions may be pushing on a bruise (or perhaps he does know, perhaps he is callous, but it's hard to imagine.)

Alexander

[Per+Aware?]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (2, 2, 5, 6) ( success x 1 )

Alexander

Frozen, but not quite. Moisture had been building up all over Alexander and, finally, was the cause for him to lose that long moment of focus. A drop of cold water ran from the hairline at the back of his head and down his spine, making him shiver. And that small recognition of his body led to more. He’d been there for a while, as the temperature had dropped. His muscles had stiffened up, joints complaining at moving again. A crick in his neck needed release. So Alexander stands, shrugging his shoulders up and rolling the knots that had formed between his shoulder blades out.

He realises that, once again, the creature that he still hoped to encounter – still hoped would take him up on his request to travel the Umbra – hadn’t appeared. There isn’t so much disappointment as… patience? It will happen when it happens. Realisation also follows that he’s not alone in this part of the park. Two familiar-but-different resonances linger with each other nearby, a third – unchanged from the last time he’d encountered it at the station – in the tree line. Running his hands over his hair to dislodge the remaining moisture, he turns to look at the closest two. They could be Elijah and Ian, they could be someone else. It does seem to be the season for change though, in more than just the weather.

Ian

On a different day, Ian probably would have made a joke of that. Today he just smirked and gave a small roll of his eyes, glancing briefly sideways. "It's... been an eventful month."

And yet he seemed uninclined to elaborate. Maybe it wasn't necessary.

"Should we say hello, or leave them alone?" Ian indicated Arionna and Alexander with a tilt of his head. The cold was beginning to creep into his bones. His hands (and his lips where Elijah had kissed him) felt chilled to the touch, though there was yet color in his skin. He shifted on his feet to keep his blood moving, walking in a lazy circle around Elijah.

Arionna de la Babin

Elijah waved.

Knowing him,she hasn't a clue. He can be dense sometimes, and other timse he's far too empathic. If she could liken him to a creature she knows well, it would certainly be a dog; loyal, friendly (far too much so), and yet sometimes doesn't get it. But...people could say similar things about her (minus the friendly).

But he waved, and despite that feeling that is forming down in the pit of her stomach, she pauses. Sometimes she even wonders if he realizes exactly how willing she is to push against her own nature sometimes when he's around.

You're growing too attached Ari. You're becoming dependent.

And now she is torn. Torn between the two that cling to each other's space, and the other who, like Elijah, pushed a little further and gave her something to go on...some bit of advice.

Does she move or doesn't she? For now she remains...still.

Elijah

"Let's be sociable," he decides, concludes with a bright and chipper smile (one that does not relay that he is cold and that his hands are cold and that he might end up with a cold in the morning, but that is a problem for Tomorrow Elijah. Today Elijah feels just fine and is happy to roll around in the grass and-

He pauses, takes a second and takes a few steps towards Arionna.

"Hey," he starts, friendly enough, "I'm thinking about playing hide and seek. Wanna play? Jenn's been riding my ass about needing to do more physical things with people that don't involve doing things with other people."

And then he turns, with no regard for personal space or the fact that Alexander might have something he wants to do aside from listen to his cabal mate's apprentice.

"Hey Alex-" a hitch, since he realizes something "-ander, wanna play hide and seek?"

HE looks towards Ian, brows raised, glance inviting, words lacking but the question quite clear. HIs word view is nothing but words and symbols, and he knows when one does not need words at all.

Alexander

[Per+Alert - I see you, Ari?]

The closest two certainly appear to be the people he was expecting them to be, but it’s Elijah’s shout across the grass that makes him smile. Definitely Elijah. He leans back, curving his spine and getting one last crack out, before turning back to a patch of grass near the lake that looks like any other. He says, to the air, “another time, then,” before turning to Ian and Elijah.

Then he turns towards the pair and starts walking, waiting until he’s a little closer before he calls back. “I can’t remember the last time I played, but I’m game.” Then, closer still when he doesn’t need to shout anymore, “But won’t it be too easy if we can just feel where each other is? Although you both don’t feel quite the same as you used to. Interesting times.”

He nods up towards the trees and the figure standing partially obscured by one trunk. “Speaking of interesting times, have you guys met Arionna, yet?”

Ian

"And what things would those be, exactly?" Ian couldn't quite resist the bait, dry amusement evident in his tone. The question didn't necessarily require a response. But he followed along behind Elijah as they approached the others, his gait long and fluid. Elijah's suggestion (that they play hide and seek, of all things) didn't get an immediate response, but when he repeated it to Alexander, Ian's breath gave an exhale of soft laughter.

"You're serious, aren't you?"

It seemed like the kind of suggestion that Ian was likely to reject on principle, but he didn't (yet.) Instead he turned to Alexander with a thoughtful expression. "Probably. You'd have to get creative."

Have you guys met Arionna, yet?

To that, Ian just nodded.

Arionna de la Babin

"Play?" It's a question of uncertainty because hide-and-seek has rarely been about play. She cants her head to the side and regards Elijah, and now the group with a bit more wariness than before. Of course this could hardly be much fun in a park right? There are trees and other good things, but it loses its fun when you lose the possibility of getting lost; or getting people lost.

"They know who I am, Alexander." Though Ian has already answered his portion of it. She steps forward slowly, enough so that they can speak normally. "How do you play this game?"

Yes. Ari hasn't a clue how to play child games. She might have more fun than she'd suspect.

Elijah

"I have a story for you, I'll have you know that Latin tutors aren't half as boring as it sounds," who would have thought the young man to have an interest in language (anyone who knows him would, actually, you don't have a love affair with words without loving each blessed detail of language, trying to piece it together to find where it may trace back to something True. Kalen might be proud. Or he might not. The path was still rocky there, but getting better.)

There's that grin, though, the kind that is ready for anything, even if it was a little childish. Was he serious? He blazes past the question in time to explain to Arionna- "It's basically that someone is it? And they cover their eyes and count to, like, sixty, and everyone runs off and hides and the person who is it has to find them and the people who are hiding have to find home base and get there to be save so the person who is it can't actually tag them but if the person who is it is really slow you end up being it for a long time and people end up tending the safe base because they don't want to actually find people who are hiding which is against the spirit of the game."

Wow. All that in one breath. He inhaled deeply.

"Basically, it is what it sounds like. The people who aren't it hide. The person who is it seeks. The people who aren't it go to home base to be safe from predation."

And, to Alexander, "Yeah, I've met Ari, we're friends." And just like that, he makes the assumption, runs with it, doesn't think it could be to the contrary because... well... he was fairly certain Arionna was his friend.

"Who wants to start?"

Alexander

“You’ve never played before?” There isn’t judgement in the question to Arionna, but there is surprise. It seems like one of those things that all kids should play at some point, just like climbing trees, playing tag, or pointing their bike down a big hill and regretting their decision half way down when the line between getting down safely and breaking something gets ever slimmer. “It’s fun, you’ll like it.”

As to the question of who’s starting? “I’m easy.”

Ian

Elijah assumed that he and Arionna were friends because Elijah was the kind of person who made friends with everyone. Ian... was not that kind of person. Both Arionna and Alexander had expressed dislike towards him in the past. Arionna's had been rather emphatic. That they were now all considering playing a child's game together in the park at night probably said something about the way people with common experiences tended to band together.

"I'll start."

He hadn't played hide and seek since his sister died. If anyone other than Elijah had suggested it, he probably would have declined. But... for whatever reason, he didn't. Perhaps there was a bit of nostalgia, there.

"We can make the boathouse home base." A pause before he grinned. "I'll count to 100. Better hurry." Then he paced over to the bench by the lake and sat down.

Arionna de la Babin

"What is it?" She asks, furrowing her brows just enough to indicate that all her questions have not been answered. This game seems half put together instead of well thought out; clearly a child's game. "Oh. You mean 'it' is the predator and those you seek are the prey. I understand. Though it does seem most intelligent to stay near this 'home base' if you know that the prey will come. "

You've never played before?

"If you wish to ask whether I have been chased, then your answer is yes. If you want to ask whether I did it 'for fun' then the answer is no."

"How far can we wander?" It made sense to her to have a sort of perimeter that they could wander around in, otherwise they'd be searching until dawn.

Her lips tightened a little, and Ari looked to both Alex and Elijah. Well then, it seemed they were about to play hide and seek....for fun.

Elijah

Elijah

"OhshitrunIan'sfast," it's the most warning he gives anyone.

There is a simple rule in survival: you don't have to be faster than a bear. You just have to be faster than the slowest person there. Elijah realized, of course, that he was the weakest link. His eyes darted to a nearby tree and he sprinted for it, knowing that he was going to need a run up if he was going to be able to reach a low hanging tree branch, momentum to help pull himself up because he wasn't exactly strong but damned if he wasn't determined.

But Arionna had a question and it made him skid to a halt, successfully managing to not fall flat on his face while doing so.

"Ian is the one doing the chasing. If he makes physical contact with you then you're it and he's not. Then you count and we all hide again. No perimeter, just as far as you can get while he's counting."

Elijah stopped and listened realizing he's talked too much and lost a good thirty seconds of time.

"Shit."

And off to try and get to that tree again!

Alexander

There’s a moment where the fun of the bizarre situation threatens to vanish, as Arionna doesn’t seem to quite get the point and bring their thoughts crashing back to reality. But there’s Elijah, dashing off and, with two quick U-turns, gets things back on track again.

Then Alexander is laughing and rushing off towards the trees too, calling back, “Just get away first, then worry about how you’re going to get back to the boathouse. We can go find jello and ice cream somewhere after!” He takes a path to the right of Elijah’s, aiming for a lighter patch of trees where he’d be able to make better time through the spaces and get further away.

Ian

When Ian sat down, he began counting, his voice raised to a loud enough pitch that the others would be able to hear if they kept within a reasonable radius. He closed his eyes as he did so, leaning back with his face tilted toward the sky and his arms draped over the back of the bench. The wooden slats felt cold, despite Alexander's recent presence there. Cold and wet, apart from the drier patch that Ian now occupied.

He could cheat, if he wanted to. Though they hadn't really laid out any specific rules about magic use. He could cheat, but he didn't. Why make the game easier?

So he counted, and the others ran for their respective hiding spots. For Ian, time seemed to pass slowly, drifting by with the monotonous rhythm of his voice.

"98... 99... 100."

When he reached the end, he opened his eyes and stood up, surveying the darkened landscape. Some time during the count, the lamps came on, filling the space around the bench with a soft glow of yellow light. There were others too, lining the path and the boathouse. But the trees remained in shadow.

Ian moved quietly, his gait different now than it had been earlier. Stealthy, predatory (hunting.)

He's already counting when Elijah tries to explain her questions. She's never felt this sort of uncertainty before. She's never stood there for a moment, considering what's happening before letting her feet carry her off. But that's what she does. The two of them run, clearly enjoying the game at hand, and she stands there for a moment, listening to the counting...

Ari finally forces her feet to push her off and she's running down the middle of where the other two had wandered, sliding to the right as she tries to spot herself some place to hide. Parks are different. Manicured. Perfect. Not as many hiding spots when you're accustom to the wild sort of space.

But she finds a bush, something big enough that she's certain she can crawl half in it, and tuck herself away.

This is not the best place to hide Arionna.

She knows that. She really does. But she's pressed for time.

He's not good at climbing.

He knows what he needs to do, spends a good five seconds just hanging there, not quite having the upper body strength to pull himself up and it's through willpower alone that he gets his skinny butt into the foliage. The tree creaked uncomfortably, and he nestled himself somewhere high in the branches.

He might not be hidden terribly well, but he was going to make it difficult for Ian to actually reach him. Now, all he could do was hope that he doesn't get driven higher.

Alexander

Elijah runs towards the trees, hoping that he just isn’t the slowest one to get away. Alexander just gets the edge and disappears into the tree line before him. But they’re both leaving Arionna behind as they look for their respective hiding places.

Once out of view, Alex slows down a little and gets a little more careful about how he’s moving. He has no idea if Ian knows much about tracking, but leaving dirty great footprints and lots of broken twigs and branches in his wake wouldn’t be hard for anyone to spot. So he tries to make it harder to be followed as he works out a way to curve back to the boathouse.

The odds were stacked in Ian's favor. Most of them likely knew that. But that wasn't really why they were playing (to win.) Alexander made an attempt to hide his tracks, anticipating the ways in which Ian might try to find him. And he was successful to a point, but the ground was soft (easily marked) and Ian was a good tracker. That month he'd spent surviving in a wasted landscape had been good for something, at least.

And there were other clues as well. Soft sounds (the creak of a tree branch,) a flicker of movement, a faint spot of color through shadowed leaves. His eyes followed the trail of tracks, leading his gaze toward three potential hiding places. Even before that, he had a rough idea of the directions they'd gone (closing his eyes did not mean he stopped being able to hear - even while counting.) But he wouldn't know for sure until he followed one of the trails, so he did.

Arionna, being the closest, was the easiest target. Elijah the next easiest. Alexander would likely be safe this round. After a short pause of consideration, Ian made for the bushes where Arionna was crouched, sliding quickly through the shadows. His feet were silent in the damp grass, and his dark athletic clothes blended easily into the landscape. She wouldn't notice him coming until he was close. Likely by then she'd feel his resonance before she actually spotted him.

Closer. Closer.

If she didn't run, he'd duck under the bush and reach out to grasp her ankle (gently.)

Arionna de la Babin

[running! I think]

Arionna de la Babin

The rule has always been thus for the prey...

If the predator is far away and you've noticed him, you are safe enough to freeze and give a signal that says 'Hey I spotted you and I can outrun you.' If the predator is smart, he will stop. Why waste energy if you're more likely to lose?

If the predator is close, running is usually a bad idea. He might miss you if you're careful, but he's also likely to get you if you run. It's hard being prey, it really is.

So she waits, and she can feel his approach before she sees him. The trouble that she has is this:

Is he coming for her or one of the others? She could cheat, though she'd hardly consider it so. There were no explicit rules against magic. But that takes time, and right now..being still is better.

That is until he's closing in. Arionna presses her right boot into the ground to propel herself up and out except...

She doesn't quite make it. She pushes, sliding up and out of the bush only to feel her left foot, the one to give her a bit more leverage, slip under her. Her leg curls and Arionna plummets to the softer ground with an obvious crunch of sticks, and a thud.

Curse you Ian.

Elijah

There was relief, yes relief, when he...

No, no he didn't see Ari. He didn't see Ian either. After all, he was actually just pretty well content to be in a tree and not getting rained on, but it was enough to remind him precisely how cold he was and what time it was and he took a quick second to check his pocketwatch- still only accurate twice a day, save for the times that he can keep time to the precise second.

He notices, he notices Ari move and faceplant and he winces. The young man inhaled quickly, hoping at least that Arionna didn't know where he was so he didn't have to try getting out of the tree. Instead, he went upward, content to entrench himself further like he had the time that he got stuck in a tree at the park.

Hmmn. This appeared to be a theme with Elijah. He patted himself down for his cell phone, realizing that this time he didn't have the ability to call Dan for moral support to get out of a tree.

"Oh, shit."

Alexander

Alexander slowly, carefully works his way through the trees, unaware of what’s happened with Arionna’s attempt to run. It seems like a decent plan – keep in the trees until he’s close enough to make a break for the boathouse. Hope that Ian is busy with one of the others so that he doesn’t notice. There’s a smile on his face as he takes another step…

And steps awkwardly on a stone, twisting his ankle. There’s a muffled crash as he hits the ground and a not-so-muffled curse as the pain hits. He leans against a tree to get up again but isn’t doing anything strenuous with that sprained ankle for a few days. He starts to hobble towards open ground.

[And Alexander’s driver needs to crawl to bed, so am taking him out of the running.]

Because I can. Because I want to.

Hunger

Hello and welcome to tonight’s episode of How to Eat Your Neighbors.

1: First off, this is going to be a potentially dangerous scene. It is possible that not all of your characters will make it out, though I certainly hope they do. It’s also possible that someone might get one good shot off and kill the antagonist in one round, so we’ll just have to see what happens.

2: I know how frustrating it can be to lose a character because you didn’t fully understand the rules, so I am 100% here for any casting or combat questions you guys might have.

3: If any of the content in this scene makes you uncomfortable, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

4: The more organized and efficient we can be, the smoother this scene will run. On that note, once we establish a posting order please stick to it, and try to make posts and (especially) combat declares and dice rolls within a reasonable time frame.

5: There are actually a couple of different ways this scene can go down, so don’t necessarily go into it thinking you absolutely have to accomplish things one way. Do what your characters would do, and we’ll take it from there.

6: We're going to roll all of our prep dice before we start posting, then I will try to tie up everything in my intro post and get us started at the house.

7: Good luck, and have fun!

Hunger

For some, the day started early. Sera and Ian and Jae-shin met up with Alex and Elijah at the chantry. Maybe the apprentices showed up later, as the sun was starting to sink low in the sky and that sense of liminal electricity hung foreboding in the air. Or maybe they came by earlier to help were they could. To talk. To figure out some semblance of a plan. The other three worked their rituals as the hours passed. Sera was able to provide an advantage in the form of time - speeding up each of them incrementally until the world around them seemed to pass more slowly. Ian quietly took Elijah and Sera aside in order to better shield them from physical threats. The other mages prepared how they could.

And Lucy? What of the Dreamspeaker? She wasn't there with the rest at the Chantry. Instead she left early for the woods around the house. She packed her tools and she found a place to work, and then she called out to the spirits of the dead; of those who'd been murdered by the woman they meant to confront. Souls trapped in the memory of what was done to them.

Now was the time. If they were ever to gain some semblance of justice. Of closure. They must take it for themselves. And so she focused on the threads of fate and prophecy and justice, and she called out. Perhaps she danced, or sang, or prayed. Whatever her methods, she called, and her voice echoed across the landscape of the penumbra. It was an exhausting ritual, and perhaps she feared that it might prove fruitless. She could not compel the spirits to come. All she could do was hope that the message found its way where it needed to go.

And then, finally, they were there. Not just one, but two, three, five... eight. All eight. Jeremy she recognized. The others were less known, but they bore the faces of those who'd gone missing over the summer. And then, one by one, they pushed their way through the gauntlet and materialized on the other side. Their forms were weak and noncorporeal, but they were there. And they were ready to fight.

Back at the Chantry, the others left in their cars and drove quietly to their destination. Ian drove with Jae-shin, while Sera took her van, leaving Dan to wait in the driver's seat. Perhaps Alex and Elijah traveled together, or perhaps they went with Sera or Jae-shin. Either way, they all got there. The vehicles were parked a safe ways down the road. Close enough that they could run to them if need be, but far enough that they'd be out of sight. When the group finally arrived at the property, they'd find a large red house in the middle of a wide grassy field, bordered by pine forest and protected by a tall, wrought iron fence. Ian and Jae-shin scaled the fence, helping Sera over the top, and if the others needed it they'd offer a hand down to help them too.

On the outside, the place looked deceptively calm, with no signs of violence or destruction or any kind of recent activity. Once past the fence, however... it was another story. Something felt different. Like they'd just passed through some kind of barrier. And looking at the house would reveal... an entirely different picture from the one they'd viewed from the road.

Patches of grass were torn up in the yard. Dark patches marked the spots where the grass had been burnt to ash, while others looked more like stains (like blood.) It was difficult to tell exact details in the dark. Sections of the house were charred. Even at a distance the smell of burnt wood was noticeable.

Elijah

Elijah was not an athletic creature. He knew this, wasn't embarrassed about this, the fact that his physical activities tended to lend themselves to more carnal ends was not exactly helping him at that juncture, save to have the occasional thought stay present and consistent in his mind. THere were things to do. There were things to do and people to see and something that they needed to stop.

He should have told Kalen what he was doing. He should have told Kalen a lot of things, but telling Kalen his thought process wasn't exactly high on his To Do list. Elijah took in the general feel of the place, a little cold now that he wasn't shoved up against someone who was a little slice of magical winter. He was too busy thinking of things he wanted to tell Jenn, things he'd wished he'd told her. He could see all sorts of things, except for what was in front of him. Funny how that works.

"Jesus," he muttered, looking at the house. He took a second to look at the people he was with, "so... what are we doing? Are we having, like, a metaphysical intervention? Do we read letters about why cannibalism is bad?"

Oh yeah, he wasn't nervous at all.

Alexander

Alexander had been early to the Chantry, but had been pretty quiet the whole time he’d been there. He knew what was coming, to some degree what they were expecting to happen. Maybe the plan itself needed to be firmed up, but in the end it all came down to one thing: The pack and their leader needed to be stopped. And that’s why he was here. Because of that sense of duty that had put him in the line of fire before and, all going well, would do again. There’s not much to be said.

He spends his time doing what he can to help the others before preparing his gear. The body armour is checked. The pistol taken apart, stripped, cleaned and reassembled. They’re all familiar motions – he keeps his gear well maintained – so perhaps it’s more out of something to occupy his hands and his mind until they were ready to go. He rides with Sera and Dan, leaving the blue bike tucked away in the Chantry’s garage.

They arrive at the house and Alexander offers to boost up anyone who might need a hand before climbing up and over the fence himself. Best hope they don’t need to get away in a hurry, right? Elijah asks what they’re going to do. Makes a joke about dropping off pamphlets. Tries to hide his nerves.

“We do what needs to be done.” The tone is almost normal, but there are tells in his body language for those who know him. He’s nervous too. But he’s had more practice in similar, if more mundane, situations, so is better at hiding it. He unholsters his Glock, checks the clip and the round in the chamber – one of the clips that Kalen had worked his particular brand of magic on earlier - then clicks off the safety.

The others are watching the house, so he looks around where they’re not watching. They don't know how many people are inside, and it's best their little group doesn't get snuck up on.

Lucy

What of Lucy the Dreamspeaker? Her day started earlier, with a soak in the impossible heat of the Node's hot spring to replenish what she could of her strength, her power. One of these days she'll have to ask around if there isn't some other place, some other Node where she can pray to her divine Avatar for strength, some place that doesn't make her feel like she's melting from the inside out. For today, though, Lucy did what needed to be done, dressed, gathered her things, and began her journey on foot to the cloaked area from her visions. It was no easy thing. She carried her large-ish yet plain mirror she used to draw out Sally Starling, and her lantern, and her bag full of other things over her shoulder.

The ritual was long, and arduous, and tasking. Lucy prayed to the dusk handmaiden, the being to whom she is merely a conduit, an oracle, a device. She readied herself and she prepared herself. She lit her lamp and lowered the Gauntlet through her mirror that her voice would carry more easily. The air around her grew gelid, frosted, too cold for such a pleasant autumn day. And in the end all she can do is hope that her voice is heard. Lucy's duty is to guide the dead, not to command. She eases their passage to the other side, doesn't compel them. She wonders if these are things she should do, feels her cheek burn where Dusk touched her so many years ago. Knows there is more to be done, but later. Later.

It seems an eternity before they arrive. While she waits, she lights her incense and bolsters her mind against intrusion. Lucy doesn't recognize most of them, but she knows them. Brian and Melissa and Kevin. Nathan, Denise. Kate and Sean. Jeremy.

She greets them as one would expect the guardian of the dead to greet them. Tired, weary, but straight and strong, chin lifted.

"I promised you justice," she says, then turns away to look over the land. The house is not easily in view, but she knows that it's there. Lifting a long and graceful and too-pale arm she points. "It's there." Looking at the gathered dead, she asks, "Will you take it with your own hands? Will you find your peace? Come." She takes a step back. "I'll help you all that I can."

And she, their Speaker, guides, and she leads, leaving behind the larger mirror. She won't be needing it for what needs to be done next.

As she nears she feels others. Most she doesn't recognize, but two are very familiar. One is cold, frozen, almost like her but not quite. The other is the tumult. The others...strangers, but those two are enough. Lucy's chin lifts, and she picks up speed, until she is running long-limbed and long-gaited to the house.

Hunger

Lucy led her charge to the house, and when she arrived at the edges of the property and sensed the presence of the other mages, she began to run. The ghosts followed, their forms shifting and fluid as smoke. As they moved through the trees, they disappeared and reappeared, blending with the shadows. And then, when they arrived at the fence, they stopped. Ian and Jae-shin looked back at them, and the expression on Ian's face snapped with surprise. The Akashic nodded to the spirits, and to Lucy, as though he understood already what it was they'd come there to do. Jae-shin offered a hand to help Lucy over the fence, should she need it.

Behind him, Sera gave a quiet curse when she saw the state of the property. It was obvious that something had gone down there recently. But what? And who was left standing at the end?

Alexander wasn't able to sense any immediate spiritual activity nearby. At least, not in the yard or the house up ahead. Sera had previously mentioned that the building was Awakened, but now? There was nothing. It felt cold and dormant to his senses. Jae-shin confirmed it.

"I don't sense any spiritual residue in the house."

Sera spoke next. "There are two people inside. Both are injured, and tired. One's still strong though - it must be her? I cannot sense her mind. The other, though. A young man. He's scared to death, exhausted, and in pain." She looked around before continuing. "The worshipers attacked Zoe's coven out here. Maybe they didn't survive the attack. There were three cars, do you see them? Maybe the survivors are looking for another victim. For her rites. I think I can find them both inside."

Ian shook his head. "I don't see any. I can sense the two in the house, too." He glanced at Jae-shin. "Can you tell if there are any corpses nearby?"

Jae-shin closed his eyes and breathed in a couple of deep, measured breaths. Meditating quietly. Whatever he found, it made his expression darken. He looked at Ian. There was a beat of ominous silence.

"There are many. In the basement of the house. Some of them are in pieces."

"How many?"

"Eleven. Twelve."

"...Fuck." Ian's curse was low and whispered.

"There are cars in the garage," Jae-shin answered for Sera.

Ian looked as though he was about to say something, but then he went suddenly still, poised and alert like an animal, his eyes fixed forward on the trees behind the house.

"Something's out there."

When it appeared, it happened very suddenly. People always talk about how bears can move more quickly than you'd think, but when you're actually confronted with it, it's all the more terrifying. The creature (it was a grizzly - and a big one) broke through the trees at a galloping run, making a beeline straight for their group. As it approached, it opened its mouth and roared.

It was not a normal bear. Normal bears did not have spikes of sharp bone sticking out from their hide. They did not have skin sagging from their face like a corpse. And when they roared, their jaws did not unhinge like a snake to reveal a second set of teeth. But all of these things happened. All of these things were there.

"It's possessed!" Jae-shin uttered a quick warning as he drew his sword. "Corrupted."

Wrong. Ravenous and hungry.

Ian pulled his sword. Ahead of them in the house, someone began to scream. The sound was muted and distant, but barely audible. That boy... something was happening to him.

"Fuck." Sera swore again. "She's coming down the steps and there's a boy in the basement who is in danger. If you can get around the bear, then you need to go. Bullets will hurt her Alexander. She's not immune."

Elijah

Under the sight of a normal grizzly bear, Elijah would have tried to play dead and hope that everything he saw on TV worked.

this, however, was not a normal bear. This was not a creature that wasn't really real anymore. This wasn't like anything he had ever seen. Eyes widened, stomach turned and he took his time to hold the handgun and familiarize himself with the fact that he was going to go in and do something that he'd only done in a friend's back yard (keep your hand steady, keep your eyes focused. Breathe and be ready for recoil. Don't look away.) And there comes a moment when people can be afraid, when fear can paralyze you and make you think that it's all over.

But action was better than nothing. He cocked his head towards the house and made his way to the door.

"C'mon, let's go," he wasn't fearless by any means. He was fool hearty, yes, but at that moment his heart was pounding and his breathing was steady and Elijah was very, very aware of how fallible his body was. About how he had to act, and act quickly. Bears and nerves be damned, they had to move.

Alexander

Two people inside – one of them hurt, scared. Most likely another victim, although the pack hadn’t shown any hesitation on turning on one of their own before. Either way, they need help.

Alexander turns to Ian, then to where Ian is looking, when he says Something’s out there. He sees the bear and get’s a feeling of something riding it when Jae-shin gives his warning. He turns and starts to bring his gun up, taking aim at the creature – whatever it had been twisted and turned into – and...

Fuck. He holds the shot, looking to Sera when she curses but still holding the pistol in position. “Ah, fuck!”. He decides. Sera seems to be happy to handle the bear and is outright telling him to go. So the gun comes down and he runs, dashing off at the same time as Elijah. And hoping like hell that the others staying to take care of the bear are a good enough distraction for them to be able to get past.

Lucy

On the outside of the fence Lucy stops because she has to stop. She does not have the ability to slide through solid objects like some Marvel heroine. But she stops up short when she sees the people with Elijah and Alexander. One is unknown, one vaguely familiar, but the third...

Lucy, eyes wide, opens her mouth and immediately snaps it shut. There is no time to ask Ian? No time to wonder at him being here, at him having that otherworldy resonance. She climbs nimbly over the fence, drops lightly on the other side, and trots to catch up.

"Hey," she says, perhaps slowly to their senses as she claps her hand on Elijah's shoulder. She gives it a gentle if not reassuring squeeze before letting go, and she does not interrupt.

There are bodies. Lucy looks to the spirits gathered with her, gauging emotions, reactions. Is it one or more of them? It doesn't matter. If the previous owners of those bones still lurked nearby they would need to wait until later. Lucy is weary, does not presently make a very good vessel for her Avatar's strength, does not have time to try to draw them over to aid in taking their own justice.

And then there is that bear. Lucy, with only a simple boxcutter (and her antique silver scissors, but those she will not use for violence) somewhere inside her bag, is no good against bears. Unless one counts potential toothaches from trying to eat nearly-frozen flesh, of course.

And anyway, their target, the target of the ghosts with her, is within. And there is Elijah, making for the door, and Alexander. Lucy spares only a glance for Ian, a glance that holds the barest hint of wonder, the slightest curve at the corner of her wide mouth. Then she's shaking her head and running after the others.

"She's inside," she says for her charges. "She's near. Almost, you're almost there."

Hunger

It was a split-second decision. That was all the time they really had to make it. Ian and Jae-shin and Sera were at the front. Two of them had drawn swords. One of them was a Disciple. And Ian knew that some of their group were not equipped to deal with something like this. That if that bear got its jaws around Elijah or Lucy they would likely not survive.

Victoria had to know that they were there. She'd probably known all along.

"Come on!" Ian roared, running both toward the bear and away from the group. Meaning to intercept it. To grab its focus. Jae-shin moved with him as though they'd been fighting together for years. Completely in sync. Sera kept further back, preparing an effect to take down the creature from a distance. And while this went on, the others took their chance.

Elijah and Alexander ran for the front door, with Lucy just behind. She was guiding the spirits that had come with them. Leading them on to... what? Hopefully some kind of justice for the horrors that were wrought upon them.

When the mages reached the door, the found it locked. It would, of course, have been too easy if it hadn't. But the spirits? Physical barriers meant little to them, and one by one they passed through the walls into the house, leaving the living beings behind.

Elijah

He really isn't a martial creature.

He really, really isn't a martial creature. And call it nerves or call it whatever, but one should probably call it what it was and there was a nice bullet sized notch in the door, but nothing else. He winced.

Alexander

Elijah’s shot goes astray, leaving a hole in the body of the door. Alexander takes aim and tries, shredding the lock and opening the way forward. He steps forward, gun raised and watchful for threats. There’s no question now that the woman behind all of this knows that they’re there. So he does what he can to protect the other two.

Lucy

Elijah pulls out a gun and Lucy quickly steps back, clapping her hands over her ears. She's about to lower them when she sees - ah, no, the door only has a fresh notch in it. Alexander takes aim and Lucy watches, brow furrowed. His gun looks like it'll be louder than the other, maybe. The ghosts have left, have gone in to find the one who orchestrated their deaths, there isn't much that she can do on her own. But she isn't about to stay outside with the terrifying bears. Perhaps she can provide moral support?

She waits for the other two to go through first, then makes her way after, pausing just inside the door to step to the side and look around. The woman outside said "she" was coming downstairs. And that there was someone with her, someone wounded and scared. If nothing else, maybe Lucy could get the one hurt out of harm's way.

Hunger

When Alex opened the door, the mages found themselves looking into a dark foyer. All of the lights in the house were off, and no one was there to greet them when they entered. If Victoria was there, she was keeping quiet. Her resonance lingered though. That sense of devouring hunger. It was so very, very strong.

Outside, there were sounds of combat. Of a roaring, huffing beast. And then a sudden surge of crackling, visceral energy followed by a bright flash.

Another scream issued from somewhere on the floor below. It was louder now, easier to distinguish. Up ahead, at the end of the hallway, there were stairs leading both up and down.

Elijah

there was a feeling of devouring hunger. A feeling that couldn't quite be sated that nawed on his consciopusness and he was running on autopilot. IT wasn't a thought of heroism, but rather, a memory of what he was supposed to be doing. A thought that he kmnew he was here for a purpose and he had to move and time was not on his side, so naturally, what Elijah did was steel himself and haul ass down to where the sound of the screaming panic terror pain fuck that sound. He followed down the stairs.

He coudl make smart decisions later. He needed to make quick decisions now.

Alexander

That feeling, so very strong but all around them. All around, so useless for trying to narrow down where Victoria might be. There’s a fleeting thought that it would be something good to know, but he’s focussed. Concentrated. He stalks down the hallway swiftly but warily, gun outstretched. He reaches the stairs, sweeping the pistol up and then down, ready to fire.

This was always as close as he’d gotten to meditation before Kalen had spent time with him, that clearing of the mind from conscious thought. Instinct steps in. And Alexander steps down, towards the screaming.

Lucy

Lucy feels that ravenous, gnawing hunger trying to worm its way into the pit of her stomach. It makes her shiver in a way that cold never will again. There is a thought, a single pondering moment where she wonders where to start looking. She should bear witness to what she's brought with her, after all. She should stand guard, cold and quiet sentinel of the dead.

But a scream from below tears its way through her, raking fingernails down her spine and causing her heart to jump. Then she is jumping, dashing forward, hot (hah) on Elijah's heels. If she can help she must. If it is not someone's time to die then she must do what she can to ensure they aren't taken too soon.

Like Elijah, there is no thought, only action. Only a need to get. to. them.

[let's go percept+alert, though]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (2, 4, 7, 9) ( success x 2 )

Hunger

The house was dark, but some ambient moonlight shone in through the windows. Enough that they could see where they were going - at least, until they began to descend the staircase. The steps were made from hardwood, and they creaked slightly beneath Elijah's weight. He was joined by Lucy and Alexander, the latter with his gun drawn and held at the ready.

As the three of them walked down those steps, the light around them grew darker. Until the door ahead of them was only a faint outline in the blackness. This door was heavier even than the first: a solid metal panel with a sturdy deadbolt. The front door had been locked. Would this one be as well?

Whoever chose to open the door, they would find it unlocked. Maybe that was a stroke of luck. Maybe it wasn't.

The first thing that hit them was the smell. Blood. The air in the basement was thick with it. Like they were walking into a slaughterhouse. But the room ahead was pitch black, and the young man? He'd stopped screaming. Now there was only this stark, ominous silence. And that resonance, growing ever stronger. She was here. Victoria. The Devourer. Jormungandr.

Waiting. For them? Likely.

Elijah

There was a smell.

His avatar wasn't screaming at him, he didn't hear dozens of voices telling him what to do. He didn't have anything except silence and a clear head. He reached for his back pocket, taking out his cell phone with the cracked screen and fiddling with it for a moment to get it to the flashlight function. He didn't want to see what was down there. He didn't want to know, but he had to know. he couldn't experience just the good, he needed to see the worst in humanity. She was here, the devourer. The serpent which devoured the world. Elijah inhaled slowly, remembering that calming breath.

"Victoria?" he asks, and his voice is a forced calm, "this is... why? Why all of this."

It just came out. He didn't mean to ask, but he had to ask.

"This isn't okay."

Like anyone would listen to reason.

Alexander

Certain things come with time. Experience is one of them. The experience of blood. Fresh, dried, pooled, splattered. The iron-tinged smell of it as you wash it away. The experience isn’t an unfamiliar one, although perhaps its intensity is more than Alexander had been exposed to before. Perhaps it was a blessing that, for the moment, they weren’t able to see anything. The smell was a warning of what was to come.

Alexander’s mind still flows clear, quiet. Focussed. Some of the Mages had found out what happens when they sneak up on him. This? This is why.

Elijah slows up, the sound of something being slipped out of a pocket. Alexander moves away. The gun stays raised, his back brushing the wall – its presence reassuring that nothing could come at him from behind. He listens, trying to place the other occupants of the room. The man had stopped screaming, but why? Because he couldn’t scream anymore? Alexander stays quiet, all the better to stay unnoticed.

Lucy

The stairway gets darker and darker, and Lucy pauses, presses against the side of the passage to allow Alexander to pass. They have guns and, she assumes, a decided lack of night vision. She lets them get ahead of her and it's only after she's assumped a place at the rear that she recalls her lantern, hastily stashed into her bag before she climbed the fence. She retrieves it now, which is easy. Finding her lighter takes more time. She's well behind the other two, is just putting her fingers around the cold metal case when the smell hits her. It turns her stomach. Lucy is no stranger to the smell of death. The chill of the grave has seeped through her skin to the marrow of her bones, and she does not always locate the departed without discovering their remains.

But this. This is just so wrong.

By the time Lucy's found her lighter, Elijah's already calling out, the light from his cell phone shining out. Lucy's light is no longer needed, but perhaps she can use it for a different purpose. She opens the door of her lantern, flicks her lighter to life and touches the flame to the wick. Soon enough, light and shadow are dancing on the walls around her and flickering over Alexander's back. As she drops the lighter back into her bag, she thinks it might be best not to go in empty handed. She finds the cold lump of her box cutter - it's too dark to see but it's white with a swan carved and stained black in the handle - shifts it to the pocket of her pants.

She does not follow the others the rest of the way down the stairs. Instead she prays, and she begs a boon of the dusk handmaiden.

Dusk handmaiden, I beg you to lend my voice strength...

Elijah flicked on the flashlight app in his phone, pointing it forward into the room. The cool beam of white light cast an eerie glow in the room, contrasted against stark shadows and pools of murky, indistinct darkness. Jae-shin had said that there were corpses down here, but if so, only one was actually visible. That one was the body of a woman in her thirties, stretched out naked across a long metal table in the center of the room. Her chest split open, with only a gaping hole where the heart should have been. It looked as though some kind of marks had been painted on her body. Elijah and Alexander might recognize them as Enochian sigils, if Kalen had ever shown them such things.

Elijah wanted to know why. It was likely that whatever answer Victoria gave him would do nothing to make the scene before them more palatable.

The rest of the room was currently empty, apart from a set of strong metal cages that lay against the far wall, a collection of edged weapons hanging on a rack to the left, and a heavy door leading off to the right. The floor was dark and slick, polished concrete with grates installed for drainage. There were splattered red stains on the floor and on the walls.

And standing behind that table with the dead woman were two people who were very much alive. One: a young man with medium-dark skin and a soft, faintly beating note of Radiant resonance, barely noticeable amid the thick fog of Victoria's devouring hunger. He was sitting on his knees with his hands behind his back, stock-still with the blade of a small axe pressed against his throat. When Elijah's light came on, he let out a couple of quick, rough, panicked breaths, but did not attempt to speak or scream.

And the person holding that weapon? If any of those present had seen the photo that Kalen had passed along, they'd recognize Victoria's face. She looked different here. Her hair was longer, and hung loose and messy around her face. Her skin looked pallid, with dark shadows beneath her eyes. But that same piercing, hungry look was still there in her eyes. In another reality, if they'd met her under different circumstances, she would have seemed beautiful. And she was beautiful. But in a sharp, cold, brutal fashion. Beautiful the way that a monster could be beautiful.

Her lips were red. There was blood on them.

Above them on the stairs, Lucy lit her lantern, and a warmer, softer glow joined that of Elijah's cell phone. She prayed, calling the spirits back to her, and gradually they appeared at the top of the stairs, but there they hesitated. As though afraid. As though trapped in memory. This time they did not cry out though. This time they did not fall to pieces. Jeremy was stronger here than he had been in the park. Stronger, perhaps, for the presence of the others. But he was still afraid.

Elijah wanted to know why.

"Because I can," Victoria said. "Because I want to."

Alexander stepped around the beam of Elijah's light, moving quietly into the room, but Victoria's eyes tracked to him almost immediately.

"Come any closer, and I'll kill him."

Elijah

"This is destroying you," he tells her, insists and pleads as though he knows this. As though his understanding what this did to her soul would somehow make things different. he didn't understand. he didn't understand how intoxicatng power was. he didn't understand what it felt like to become powerful. To be stronger, faster. To have a never ending hunger ripping at his insides.

"If you don't stop now, there might not be any coming back from it. Right now, it... things are bad, but you can turn back from this. You can walk away, too."

he couldn't see anything, could read anything, perhaps because of her solid poker face or perhaps... perhaps.

"What do I need to do to make sure everyone walks out of this place alive?"

Alexander

Victoria speaks and Alexander swings around, bringing the pistol to bear on the woman. He heeds her warning, though, and stops moving across the room.

There might have been thoughts. Thoughts of the people – the known people – who had gone missing since June. Brian. Kate. Jeremy. Melissa. Kevin. Nathan. Denise. Sean. He knew their names. He knew what had happened to them now. Them, and the others who hadn’t been reported missing. The others who might never be found. Dead, alone, forgotten.

Thoughts of what had been done to them. Dragged here alive, hurting, in fear for their lives. Tied to that table while Victoria painted them and prepared them and... ripped their hearts out while they were still alive? Would she have had enough humanity left to kill them first?

Thoughts of what Victoria could go on to do. Starting a new pack. Killing more people. Getting stronger and stronger until... She had already fed – the blood on her lips.

Others had seen him unsure and questioning, struggling to deal with what he is and what he should be. Delilah had asked before whether his resonance was anything to do with his personality. He’d said no but, at that time, he hadn’t been floating on instinct. All those thoughts put to one side, his core cold. Frozen. They knew what she was and what she had done.

The frozen heart of the comet is in his voice when he replies. “Ok.” He pulls the trigger.

Lucy

"Here," says Lucy, drawing the spirits of the dead to her like moths to, well to a flame. "She's here."

And then they are here, too. Jeremy and the others. Lucy turns to look up at them, chin lifted, green eyes colorless in the semi-darkness. She holds her lantern aloft, and holds out her hand to them, beckoning.

"Come," she says, voice gentle. She could lie if she wanted to take such a route to compel them. But Lucy is an honest girl, for all that she could lie. She doesn't tell them that Victoria can't hurt them now, that the worst is over. What she says, voice kept low just for them, is,

"It's up to you now. My friends are downstairs, and they can try to hurt her, and maybe they will hurt her. But the debt will still be there. If she has any people left they can and will look for them, and the cycle of violence will just keep going.

"But you can end it. I've found your justice, and it's there," she says, raising her lantern to shine down the stairs. "You can repay her for everything she's taken from you. Your dog," she says, looking to Jeremy. "Your lives. Your futures.

"You just have to go down those stairs. Do in death what you couldn't in life. Set yourselves free."

Hunger

Would things have been different if they'd come earlier? If they'd been the ones to attack first instead of the Hermetics? All those remnants of violence outside... and Jae-shin had said that there were bodies in the basement (probably behind that door.) What exactly had happened here the night before?

Whatever the events, Victoria had survived, but even an Adept could be vulnerable when fighting alone against a large group. And she was tired. Tired and weakened from her efforts the night before. Alexander chose to call her bluff. It was a risk. Miss, and Victoria might very well kill her hostage. And he did not miss, but the bullet somehow refused to reach its target, its forward momentum slowed by a kinetic barrier. But instead of cutting the boy's throat, she chose instead to think pragmatically, and hurled her throwing axe across the room. It was a good throw, and likely would have disarmed Alexander if he hadn't moved, but Alexander's instincts were wired tight. He dodged swiftly out of the way, and the weapon lodged itself in the wall behind him.

Meanwhile, Lucy and Elijah did what they could to tear down the Adept's defenses, and Victoria's hyper-swift movement slowed to a more normal speed. Upstairs, they were re-joined by Ian and Jae-shin, with Sera limping after them. The two men ran through the house and sped past Lucy down the stairs just as the sound of a breaking window announced the presence of an as-yet unknown party.

And what of those spirits? The ghosts of Victoria's victims. They looked down at the room where each of them had been sacrificed. This was the place, Lucy had said. This was the time for them to gain justice. And so? They vanished. But only for a moment. When they reappeared, they surrounded Victoria, watching her with cold, spectral, accusing eyes. Victoria looked at them and snarled a curse in some ancient tongue. Venomous and threatening. But they weren't the most immediate threat, so she focused her Will on Alexander, whose gun contained bullets that might easily rip her pattern to shreds.

She chanted something under her breath - a litany of archaic, powerful words. And she licked the blood on her lips. Then Alexander fired. Once. Twice. And his bullets shattered bones and muscle and sent her blood spraying onto the walls.

But he didn't kill her. Not quite. And when she released her effect, it tore into his pattern and flayed open a couple of searing wounds in his back and chest.

There was an opportunity, and Ian took it. His katana swung in high, brutal arc and separated Victoria's head from her body. The sound it made when it hit the floor was wet and heavy and hard. Her lifeless body followed a moment after, seeping blood in a thick pool around Ian's feet. He was breathing hard. His face and his sword were dripping with Victoria's blood.

She was dead.

But no. Not gone. Where her body fell, another spirit began to rise up, hissing and clawing her way back to the mortal realm as though she could hold herself there by force. That was when the ghosts did what they'd come there to do. Acting as one, they flew forward and attacked, tearing into her Will and her spirit one piece at a time. She fought back hard, and once or twice one of the ghosts flickered as though it might break apart, but somehow their spirits held on to reality. And gradually, Victoria's presence got weaker and weaker. Until finally Jeremy reached his hand into her chest and crushed her heart. And her light... went out.

"Paul?"

That was the girl on the stairs. She moved past Lucy, giving her a nod of thanks, and descended into the basement. When she saw Victoria's body lying on the floor, she gave a hiccuping little gasp, but her attention shifted almost immediately to the young man in the corner, who'd just finished freeing himself from his ties. They looked at each other with shock and relief, and the girl gave a sudden, hysterical sob. Then they rushed to throw their arms around each other.

"I thought you were dead," the girl whispered over and over. "I thought you were dead..."

Didn't want to eat today, wasn't going to want anything after this.

"We need to bury people," it's all he can think. All that comes to mind, all he can get out. He sounds exhausted and wired.

"We need to bury people and give them their last rites and.. and... yeah..."

He breathed. Breathed deep and tried to keep his head together but he couldn't stop looking at her body and how it didn't have a head and there wasn't a fucking head. And how he wasn't sure if she was going to laeve a wraith or if she was going to move on and he needed to know, he needed to know what was going to happen and he needed to know if her soul was clean and he didn't know and he didn't know if things would be okay-

Lucy

There is commotion downstairs. Every shot fired, every grunt, every scrape of a sole on the concrete floor sets Lucy's pulse jumping. It kills her that she can't join her friends, but it's better that she remain where she is. She is a guardian, a sentinel. She is the watcher on the wall (the handmaiden who guards the gateway into the Underworld). She is not a fighter, but perhaps in the small space of the stairway she can at least keep anyone else from going down to join the fray. She would give her life protecting the others that way.

Ian and the others come first, then while she desperately calls upon the power of her Avatar to tear down Victoria's magic. Then the stranger. She says she's there to help and Lucy believes her, stands aside and lets her go and turns her face upward until-

silence falls not long after. Closing her eyes she presses her back to the wall and slides to sit on one of the steps.

She should go, she knows that she should go. She should bear witness to what she's brought to this place, to the justice she led the dead to. She should check on her friends, see who might be injured, see who might need a hug-

Her eyes snap open then. Despite the dull throb of an exhausted headache, Lucy pushes herself up the wall and fairly tumbles down the stairs. In the doorway she pauses, sees the blood, the bodies. Her lips part but no sound comes out. Then she looks at Elijah and her feet are shuffling forward before her gait steadies. One of her hands wraps around his. The other comes to rest against the side of his neck, thumb pressed against the bone of his jaw, her touch cold, her skin leeching the warmth from his. Still, she pulls, tugging him closer, close enough to put an arm around his shoulders and hold him tight.

"I'm here," she whispers. "I'm here."

Alexander

It all starts so quickly. Victoria is threatening them, threatening the man with an axe to his throat. Don’t come close, she says, or he dies. Wasn’t he dead anyway if they didn’t do anything? Dead, with Victoria gaining who knows what from his death. It was a gamble, taking the shot. It was a gamble that it would surprise her before she could do anything to harm the guy. A gamble that she would go down before any of them got hurt. A gamble that almost paid off.

If he was asked to describe the details of the fight later, he’d be pressed to remember. He remembers shooting, three time was it? And he remembers the pain – oh, hell, the pain! – when Victoria tried to tear him apart. And that final moment when Ian ended it, once again, by decapitating her.

That ice that formed around his core, which made him so certain that what he was doing was the right thing to do, start to fade away again. Doubts start to creep through the cracks, but he pulls that shield closer, tighter, for a little while longer. Long enough to see the spirits of the victims tear what remained of Victoria apart. Long enough to see Zoe and Paul reunited. Long enough. Just a little while longer.

He nods when Elijah says people need to be buried. They do need an ending, the living as well as the dead. He’d offer more, but there’s not much left to offer right now. He carefully, deliberately, puts the safety back on his pistol and holsters the weapon.

mnemosyne

Serafíne is at the top of the stairs and she can taste the magic in the air, feel it harsh in the back of her throat, feel the way the world wants to snap back against the effect that Victoria works to blast Alexander, feel the strange and strangely glorious mingling of resonance in desperate countermagick to the Adept's effects. She does not rush into the fray, the way Ian and Jae-Shin do. There's very little will left in her body and she already sports the beginnings of a mild concussion, the raccoon eyes, the stiff neck.

When it is over - and it is over with surprising quickness - she does shuffle down the stairs, a careful hand on the bannister, searching out Alexander, whose wounds she can see, and Paul, whose injuries she felt from afar. She reaches first for Alexander, both arms opening as she wants to pull him close and she's smiling at him and there is a sheen to her eyes and her pupils are too-large, even in the darkened basement and she is trying to urge him to calm, to call to his spirit and his body to heal and heal itself, to transcend his skin and transmute his injuries and remind his body of what it means to be whole -

but he stiffens and she reads that resistance, the need to brace himself and there's a moment between where she is already working through her focus and finding her skin electric with and by and for magic, except, except, except, an abrupt cessation, a change that feels strictured and artificial and she's exhausted but she pulls herself back into her body and leaves it by other means. This takes longer. She wants to tell him to be still but the world is absolutely changed around her and she has given herself over to this instense hallucination wear she sews all the wounds in his body closed with this thread of living sinew she pulls from herself: mind and will and body.

No one else sees anything, really. They just feel her magic in the air, and see her, perhaps, moving her hands, reacting to things that no one else can see.

--

The same thing happens with Paul, though perhaps she does not even try to touch him. She could taste his fear and his pain and his exhaustion. So.

--

Afterwards, Sera climbs a few steps and sinks down to wait while they work out what must be done. She cannot really keep her eyes open and kinda dozes and cannot walk fast right now but is perfectly compliant, minutes or hours later, when someone thinks to reach for her elbow and help her up and tell her it is time to go.

Hunger

It was a horrible skill to have: the ability to decapitate someone. If someone had asked Ian as a child if he'd thought it was something he'd need to learn, he'd probably have been horrified by the question. And up until the other night he hadn't been involved in any of this. He hadn't seen or spoken with the ghosts of the departed. He hadn't run into anyone whose resonance itched with ravenous hunger. He'd heard the messages on Ginger, so it hadn't exactly been a surprise when Elijah had called to ask for help. And for whatever it was worth, he understood the threat enough to know that this wasn't the kind of thing one said no to. Not when he was capable of helping.

It shouldn't have been him, though. Shouldn't have been him that killed her. But he was there, and she was standing front of him, and even with two bullets in her she could have killed any one them. She did try to kill Alexander, and given another few seconds she very might have succeeded.

He should have let Alexander shoot her again. Later, he will think about this. Later he will think about the fact that he didn't hesitate to murder someone - not a monster, not a walking corpse, not a body infested with a corrupted spirit. An actual fucking human being. He will think about it, and he will wish he'd let the cop finish her off. But right then? All he could do was stare at the body on the floor and the blood dripping off of his sword, reliving the images of those ghosts ripping her soul apart. There was a slight tremor in his hand. Jae-shin noticed, and the Akashic put his hand on the blunt side of Ian's weapon and pushed it gently down. As though to remind him that the fight was over. Ian glanced at him and wiped some of the blood from his face.

"We should check that room."

Jae-shin nodded, and the two walked over to check the door that led into the other part of the basement.

And what of those ghosts? Did they disappear once they'd exacted their revenge?

Not exactly. But they didn't stay in the basement. Instead they turned and looked at Lucy, and each of them gave her a slow nod before flickering out of sight. They stayed close though.

Sera worked her healing will on Alex and Paul, and gradually their wounds mended. She paid a price for her sacrifice, as was often the case with healers, but given time, she too would heal. They had all survived the encounter. That alone was something to be thankful for. Zoe looked at Sera with a grateful expression and thanked her again for everything she'd done. Zoe, who was supposed to have been in San Diego, but who had turned around and flown back only a few days later. Because she couldn't let it go. She couldn't walk away without seeing what happened. Even if it killed her.

And now she was reunited with her friend. Her brother. Her cabal-mate. Someone she'd thought long gone. The two of them held each other while Sera healed his wounds, silent and so very grateful to be together.

The others comforted each other the best they could. But when Zoe and Paul saw the bodies in the meat locker (saw the frozen faces of their brothers and sisters) their grief and their tears returned. There were other bodies there as well. The woman on the table in the other room. And more... likely the Hermetics who'd attacked the day before. Some of them were cut into pieces. Some of the pieces were missing.

Ian and Jae-shin helped with whatever clean up needed to be done. Locating Alexander's bullets. Making sure that none of them left behind any remnants of their presence there. It took a long time to clean up Victoria's body and wash the blood down the drains. Someone would have to dispose of her corpse, and Jae-shin, who drove a flatbed truck and had likely burned more than a few bodies in his life, volunteered to take her with him.

By the time they left the house, the sun was rising. And the ghosts of Jeremy Tran and the other victims were standing in the grass, watching the light grow steadily brighter on the horizon. As the sun came up, their bodies seemed to glow, and Jeremy hummed something soft and quiet. The same song he'd been humming to himself on the night when Lucy and Elijah had met him. Then, as the sun rose higher, they vanished.

It felt like an ending. Or a new beginning.

[How awake are we?]

Dice: 7 d10 TN7 (2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9) ( success x 3 )

Ian

It was around 1:00 in the afternoon when Grace, Kalen, Lena and Elijah got the text from Ian. And for once, it wasn't anything about some terrible danger or disaster. It was simply this:

Hey, my friend and I are trying to set up an impromptu soccer game at Crestmoor Park. Feel like playing?

He fired that same text off to a handful of other people, at least one of whom (Emma) texted back with a confirmation. Any positive responses would have been given directions and encouraged to 'bring a friend', which was likely how Alex ended up hearing about it. So it was about half an hour later when Ian and Jae-shin arrived at the park, dressed appropriately in soccer gear (Jae-shin had a thin green athletic shirt while Ian went shirtless) and kicking a ball around the field to warm up.

Emma showed up a few minutes later, and she waved at Ian from across the field as she paused to tie her hair up. Ian jogged over at tossed the ball at her chest, smiling when she caught it. "Hey you."

"Who's that?" she asked, nodding towards where Jae-shin stood.

"Just a friend. We train together a lot."

"Ah." There was a little smile at that, which Ian chose to ignore.

The weather was nice. It was sunny. Warm. A perfect day for a game, really.

Lena Reilly

Lena responded back with, I'll be there! I'm gonna play cheerleader. The woman isn't one for the kind of physical exertion that can lead to injuries, after all. She has to be careful about that. But she welcomes the opportunity to show up and hang out with some friends, especially when she's too damned good at making herself a hermit. So her green Ninja motors its way to Crestmoor, the woman dressed in the usual green and black jacket that she wears when she goes out and matching helmet. It may seem strange that a woman who is afraid of a little soccer-induced bruising is willing to zip around on a high-speed death machine, but anyone who knows a Cultist well would know how little their personal boundaries of "acceptably unsafe" vs. "too far" tend to make sense to anyone but themselves.

She steps off the bike and attaches the helmet to the back, unzipping her jacket as she walks over to reveal a T-Shirt that reads "GO TEAM (the one that currently has the ball." She smiles a little bit, hanging back slightly and taking a lean against a tree as she watches for now. More people here so far that she doesn't know compared to ones she does, and that means she doesn't impose herself yet...even if her Resonance does.

Elijah

There wasn't much dragging to be had. All Elijah had to do was mention that Ian said something about soccer and Jenn was there, carting her friend along in the civic and dressed ready forwhat was going to prove to be an actually athletic experience.

"I love soccer," Jenn announced.

Elijah, sadly, was not the kind of athlete that Jenn was. he was terrible at sports, he was largely unafraid of the fact that he was terrible at sports but practice made perfect and all that other stuff and it gave him an excuse to look at people while they were shirtless. Both partes were dressed and ready for soccer, and Elijah even bothered to not wear a vest this time. Which meant his pocketwatch was shoved in Jenn's purse along with a couple water bottles and some brownies.

"you've said that, like, four times," Elijah teased.

"Because I really, really, really, really love soccer," she said with a grin.

Grace

Ian's message came at a good time, yeah? It's a day when people desperately need some companionship and togetherness and all that bullshit that makes you feel human again after, say, talking to a Techocrat or dumping a Nephandus into his own Styx.

She responds back with an: okay. I'll try to drag Kalen with. No guarantees.

Because yeah, he needs to get out.

She met him at the office wearing a sky-blue tee that has a guy playing baseball on the front, with 'TOUCH DOWN' as the verbiage. It's the perfect shirt to go play soccer in. Which, let's say, Grace has not done since grade school, and even then she mostly stood staring off into nothing thinking about anything but soccer.

It's not really about the game is it?

Somehow, she managed to convince him that going and playing a sport in the outside would be at least tolerable. Maybe?

So they show up, Grace bright-eyed, if not exactly enthused about the whole sports aspect of the whole thing. At least her normal uniform of jeans and tee shirts is suitable for this.

"I think you aren't allowed to use your hands. Except sometimes. Like, the goalie can use their hands. And there are times when you throw the ball, but if you do that at other times you are in so much trouble..." Grace says as they walk.

"I think I'm just going to play it by ear. Not literally. Although maybe..."

Alexander

It’s a couple of days since they returned from… if a Sleeper should ask, somewhere out of town. After doing a little gardening for a friend, maybe. Either way, Alexander has been doing reasonably well. Oh, there have been bad dreams about a certain black river, waking with soaked sheets from cold sweats, but he’s looking reasonably awake and with it.

He’d just been arriving at the warehouse to check on Kalen – he didn’t seem to be doing so well after their… trip. Alexander had seem Kalen get a little twitchy around water before – he’d been worried that dipping his hand into the waters of the node was going to break it when he caught the reaction – but he didn’t know the reasons.

So here he is, arriving just behind Grace and Kalen. He’d stopped off at home to change before heading over, and the lack of delay in his arriving probably says something about his driving.

Alexander? Isn’t wearing anything particularly special once he changes out of his bike gear in the lot. Blue trainers, black shorts and a red vest top. There’s a rucksack holding it, slung over one shoulder, and he carries the helmet in the opposite hand. He takes a couple of moments to look over the Ninja parked in the lot nearby, but follows the others over to the field. There’s maybe a momentary pause when he sees Ian on the field. They haven’t so much as spoke to each other since that night by the reservoir. This could be interesting.

Kalen

Kalen had attempted to spend the day sulking in the library. He had tried to insist that there were things he had to do. Put together information on vampires for new Mages. Research the locations of weapons for hunting the undead. Research reanimation rituals. Update their computer model of Denver with current events. Historical events.

But Grace had started on him and then she'd been joined by Alexander and so Kalen has been dragged away from books into the sunshine. He has played soccer. He did attend school until he was fourteen, at least sporadically. He knows...you kick the ball. So he is convinced to come voluntarily instead of being dragged, which he wouldn't put entirely past either Grace or Alexander.

So he is there, listening to Grace explain a game he can't really explain any better, in a pair of loose grey pants and a white tee-shirt. He does grab them bottled water, because of course he has that in abundance. He lets them talk him out of excursions to buy things like soccer shoes or half of a bakery or coffee (who even brings coffee to a soccer game, Kalen?) or tangerines or whatever else he can think of as a stalling tactic because this game is in like five minutes Kalen just get in the fucking car.

Ian

Ian and Emma looked as though they probably moved in the same social and professional spheres. They were both beautiful. Both graceful and athletic in the way that dancers could be. They both had that same kind of untouchable air to them. Emma was tall and darker skinned, with long brown hair (now fixed in a loose knot atop her head) and large eyes. She had on dark blue athletic shorts and a black sports bra.

Jae-shin wasn't a dancer, but he wasn't exactly in poor shape. On the contrary, he looked as though he worked out on a daily basis. (It had, in fact, been his idea to have the soccer game.) He watched Ian and Emma for a moment before jogging over to join them. When he got there, he introduced himself to Emma in an accent that marked him as Korean, and the two of them held a brief conversation as Ian spotted Lena by the trees. It wasn't long before she was joined by the others, and Ian gestured to Emma and Jae-shin to join him at the side of the field, where everyone seemed to be congregating.

So it was that the group came together: seven mages and two sleepers. Jae-shin stood slightly behind Ian, rolling the ball skillfully between his hands. To those who could feel such things, he resonated like the depths of the ocean: Fluid and Abyssal.

"Hey," Ian greeted. He offered a smile to Lena, sweeping his gaze around to include most of the others present. Even Alex got a nod. "This is Emma," Ian introduced the two people behind him, "and Jae-shin." He didn't offer the latter's Tradition, because there were sleepers present, but Jae-shin nodded to the group in a slow, knowing gesture.

"I suppose we should pick teams," Ian offered, glancing around the group with an appraising gaze. Some of them were likely more familiar with the game than others. "Who wants to be captain?"

"I will," Jae-shin offered.

Ian eyed him for a moment, and something passed between them (some small spark of competition.) "Anyone care if I take the other one?"

Grace

It's just like Kalen to stall with the aid of tangerines and why they're a dire need. Nobody ever needed tangerines to play soccer, Kalen.

Still, it's nice to see that he's willing to be argued with. Nice to see Alexander is also arguing on her side.

Sometimes, along the path, you don't exactly stop. Never stop. It's always a help though, to make sure that you can continue putting one foot in front of the other. Sometimes, it's other people who you allow to convince you of this fact.

Grace smiles at Jae-shin when she and her pod of Mages arrives. "Pick me last. I have a reputation to maintain here."

Lena Reilly

"Hey." She says it with a little smile and looks around as she senses first Elijah, then the trio of Grace, Alex and Kalen. She raises her hand to wave at them all, including the ones she doesn't know--Jenn, Jae-shin, Emma--getting comfortable in her position against the tree.

"Nice to meet you," she says, directed to Emma and Jae-shin...and Jenn too, once she gets within the vicinity. Her introductions are made with a warm, easily friendly tone. "I'm Lena." Nice and simple, left there for the moment. "Hey guys," is her greeting to the Awakened that she does know. When the two guys step up to be captains she smiles and shakes her head.

"It's all you guys. I'm just spectating today anyway."

Elijah

"I'll be captain if no one else wants it," Jenn said. She was a pretty enough girl with a messy haircut and a tattoo of an iris on one of her thighs. She had a tank top on, so only part of a unicorn peaked out over her shoulder.

"That's Jenn. Jenn? That's Kalen and Grace and Alex and Lena-"

"I've heard, like, a ton about you guys."

Alexander

Alex jogs over to join Kalen and Grace. Ian gets a nod in return. The jury is still out on the final opinion on the man. Preliminary verdict: dick, but might be ok. Lena gets a smile and a, “Hey!” in return. Elijah, a nod and a wave. Kalen? A grip on the shoulder.

He’s about to introduce himself when Elijah does it for him. “Alexander,” he corrects, giving Elijah a look. He isn’t Alex to strangers. But otherwise it’s smiles and nods for the others.

He shrugs when they ask about captains.

Grace

Grace rolls her eyes at the 'Alexander' comment, because oh God, can he stop being so uptight for five minutes? Something about cops and sticks up their asses huh? But she doesn't say anything. She's in too good a mood to spoil it.

Instead, she waves at Lena, who's 'just spectating' and why didn't anyone tell Grace that spectating would be an option here? She's likely to kick someone. In the head. Somehow. It's bound to happen, despite the unlikelihood.

"Oh, man, Lena has the right idea. Spectating on our excursion to sportsball? Should be just hilarious."

Kalen

Kalen rolls his eyes when Alexander catches his shoulder. "Oh? You think you're already forgiven?" But there is definite affection in that tone, though he doesn't fit himself into Alexander's side or do anything cuddly. He does shake off Alexander's hand, but only so that no fingers are smashed when he bounces his shoulder into Alexander's. It's rougher than he is with Grace, but light enough. Playful.

Look! More people. He waves to them, and doesn't manage quite the show of being social he put on for Alexander. "Hey." But they all get a smile and a bit of a nod.

"However," is all he says about teams and captains.

Ian

"I care," Emma responded to Ian's suggestion with a teasing loft of her brow. "Just because the two of you called us here, don't think you get to run the show. Besides, I'd like a female captain." At this she smiled at Jenn, the expression delicate and wry. Ian glanced between the two, then offered a little huff of laughter that seemed intended mostly for Emma.

"Fair point," he conceded, gesturing to Jenn. "She can have it." There was a quarter stuck between the laces of one of his shoes. Ian retrieved it and flipped it into the air. When he caught it, he pressed his hand down over it, glancing back at Jae-shin. "Heads or tails?"

"Tails."

Ian revealed the quarter on his hand. It was heads. "Jenn gets first pick."

And Jenn's first pick? Ended up being Ian. So when it came time for Jae-shin to select his first player, he surveyed the group for a long moment, then nodded to Alexander.

Back to Jenn, who unsurprisingly grabbed Emma for her team.

Jae-shin's next pick was Kalen. And Jenn went for Grace, who, as it turned out, was not going to be the last picked on this particular day (despite her reputation.)

That honor was left to Elijah, who got to join Jae-shin's team by default. When they were all grouped up, Jae-shin turned to his team and asked, "which positions would you prefer?"

Assuming Jenn did the same, Ian and Emma both offered to take offense.

Lena Reilly

She watches the back-and-forth picking with a bit of a smile, keeping track of who's going where. The team makeups interest her; it's chemistry, or a recipe, or human dynamics. It's connections splitting, forging, reforging. There's a bit of a tilt to her head as she watches, and then they're done choosing and she grins.

"Unfortunately I couldn't bring my pom-poms with me on the motorcycle, but I'll throw out all the 'Go Teams' I can manage."

Alexander

And it’s almost like being back in the high-school gym again. Alexander had been pretty good at the more physical side of high-school, so didn’t often have the honour of being the last picked when teams were being formed. He walks over to stand near Jae-shin while the rest of the teams are picked.

“I’ll go offense.” There’s maybe a flash of a smile as he offers.

Grace

Ohh, so now it comes to it, eh? Grace makes faces at Alex (I'm going to wipe the floor with you!) and Kalen (look out, punk, you're going down!) as she walks over to join the other team.

Which, hello Jenn. Nice to meet you. Have a pale nerd wearing a shirt that displays all of her knowledge of soccer.

"Hi. I'm Grace," she says to the others, before going to stare at the grass. They already kind of knew that, didn't they? "I have no idea what offense means? Uh. I know not to use my hands!"

Elijah

"Okay," Jenn starts, "who wants to be what? Offense goes and takes the ball down the field and scores, defense keeps their people from kicking the ball into our goal. Goalie is in charge of defending the goal. You might wanna be defense? Besides, it's okay if you're not super sure what to do because I've got a good feeling that our offense is going to rock faces."

Jenn said this all with the kind of confidence that came with being team captain, even if she wasn't the best player on the field she certainly tried her best to inspire some kind of confidence in Grace.

--

Meanwhile, there was the question of where it was Elijah was going to play. He looked a little like a deer in the headlights, because this was very much like high school gym class and that usually ended with him getting sent to the nurse because he faked an injury well enough that he didn't have to do pushups anymore.

"Dibs on defense," Elijah said, eager to avoid having to actually make his way down the field.

Kalen

Grace's look gets a little flash of amusement from Kalen, but no return challenge, Jae-shin just gets a black look in return to his question.

"I may not have been into teams as a child. You're going to have to explain." That tone is flat, distant. He'll try for Alex. He'll try for Grace. He cannot be bothered to try for strangers. Even strangers he would otherwise take a stronger interest in. "But I'll do whatever."

Ian

"You can be defense," Ian offered to Grace. "It's easy. Just hang out by the goal and when the ball gets close kick it back down the field, preferably to me or Emma."

And that left Jenn as goalie. Hopefully her skills would make up for her small size.

On to the other team...

Jae-shin nodded to Alex and Elijah. When Kalen offered him that look, Jae-shin regarded him for a moment quietly. "I apologize. I should have explained. The goalie protects the goal." He nodded toward the large white net at the end of the field. "He or she must stay within the boundary of the goal, but within that boundary they can do whatever they need to do to catch the ball, including using their hands. No one else may touch the ball with their hands but the goalie. Defensive players remain on their side of the field, and they help protect the goal. Their job is to get the ball away from the opposing team and back to their offensive players. The offensive players do most of the running. They try to take the ball to the other team's goal in order to score points."

After this explanation, Jae-shin considered the options. "If you think you can run, I can take the goal. If not, I can take offense."

Presumably they would be able to work out who went where by the time they all assembled on the field, because Jenn's team seemed more than ready to get going. Maybe Jenn had some suggestions for them, or maybe she'd wait and see how things went. Either way, when they were ready, Ian and Emma jogged out onto the field and took positions near the center line.

Whenever Jae-shin's team finished debating positions, Jae-shin leaned in to whisper a final piece of advice. "Ian and I have played before. He'll be focused on me as the main threat. Use that to your advantage."

And with that, he led their team onto the field.

Ian

[Alright, in the interest of efficiency, I figured we could handle the mechanics of this scene as follows:

The field is 120 yards long. Each success on a Dex+Athletics roll equals a distance of 10 yards. (Meaning it will take 6 successes to get from the center of the field to the opposing team's goal.) So we will determine where players are located on the field based on their dice rolls.

All other actions (stealing the ball, blocking the goal, etc) are also Dex+Athletics. Easy-peasy. Most will be standard diff, but if you want to do something tricky then add one or two, as suits. We'll be rolling this like rounds of combat, with inits and declares.

Obviously we will not have time to play out an entire game (which would be like... 60+ rounds?) so I figure we'll just go until we have to crash and whichever team is in the lead at that point can be assumed to win.]

Lena Reilly

Lena actually knows the game of soccer quite well. One of her many little things she never happens to have shared; she played soccer as a teenager in high school. Her brother always told her that made her a bit of a cliche, but she didn't listen to him. She probably should have paid more attention to him at various times in her life.

But we're getting off-base. The point is, she knows soccer and she used to be a pretty solid center forward. So she can follow the game well and she's enjoying watching her friends, and the people she doesn't really know, having fun together. She cheers for both sides...whoever has the ball and whoever is defending, but more the attackers since that was her positional focus. She gets almost as much fun observing as they probably have playing.

Ian

Here's the thing about sports: sometimes the game ends, and no one scores a single point. It doesn't happen often, but it happens.

So the afternoon wound on into evening and the players worked themselves into a sweat, but the score remained a draw. Each of them had their moments. Ian and Emma were excellent runners. Jenna and Jae-shin kept their goals safe even when it seemed sure they might miss. Despite their lack of experience, both Grace and Elijah pulled some great last-ditch defensive maneuvers. And Kalen and Alex worked together like they could practically read each other's minds. And Lena, of course, cheered them on like a pro.

It was a fun afternoon. The kind of cathartic release they likely all needed after the week they'd just had. And even though they ended the game without a clear winner, it still felt like a good note to close the day on.

When it was over, Ian and Emma bumped shoulders in this gesture of friendly comradery, and Jae-shin walked up to shake Jenn's hand as the captains officially called the tie.

"Good game," he said.

Because it had been.
