What do you see?

Kalen Holliday

[How awake are we?]

Dice: 7 d10 TN7 (3, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10) ( success x 6 )

Kalen Holliday

Kalen has been preparing. At least in the sense that the library, which has always been clean, smells of lemon furniture polish and some of the empty space atop shelves and tables now hosts small statues and bonsai. There is even a small copper fountain on one of the tables nearer a corner. There is no real smell of harsh cleaners, only citrus. Because one must use natural citrus cleaners when one has cats, right? Also if one simply dislikes the scent of bleach.

Kalen isn't cleaning or dusting or any of that at the moment though, he is settled on one of the couches, sprawled over it so as to take up nearly the entire thing, with a book in one hand and a wine glass in the other. There is a half full bottle of wine on the table. And no coffee. No notes. No maps. Nothing to indicate that Kalen is doing anything but reading a book with a glass of wine. In dark blue jeans and a dark blue shirt that is one of those skin-hugging, wicking things. Alexander has seen him in skin-hugging, but never in anything that looked remotely like it was meant for some kind of athletics. And...color. Dark, maybe. But, no black and no grey.

Alexander Brandt

Alexander’s resonance has been hanging over another part of the warehouse-and-office arrangement for a while now. Of the facilities on offer here, the library is probably one of the parts of least interest to him. Books have their uses, but aren’t objects of reverence in themselves. Kalen and Elijah and several others are happy to lose themselves in aged pages. Alexander prefers to get lost elsewhere.

No, Alexander has been making use of the shooting range for an hour or two. Targets have been shredded, with varying degrees of accuracy at varying distances. Weapons – his own and those stored at the range – have been checked and maintained. Each gets a few test rounds fired before being taken apart, cleaned, oiled and reassembled. Empty casings are collected and stored to be recycled or reused later. Eventually there’s nothing left to be done there. So he heads towards the library to join Kalen.

He sneezes as he enters, the odour of citrus an unexpected change from the usual smell of aging and aged books. His approach to the couches slows as he takes in the additions to the shelves. “If I didn’t know better, I’d ask if your mother was coming to visit. You really want to make a good impression on this person the Order is sending, don’t you?” Alex sets a gun case on the table before settling down into one of the spare seats.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen sets his book down and curls up, so that there are options that aren't far away or smushed into about six inches of space. Where far away is defined as a chair not four feet from him. Heaven forbid. That might as well be Antarctica. "Mmmmmmmmm...the better to get them to leave. Much as with my actual mother, I prefer to love them from a distance. With spies and occasional notes.

"Granted, if my mother was coming here I'd probably just buy a plane ticket to Chile. Of course, she's probably too high to even remember I exist or too focused on getting that high to remember I exist, so really that particular eventuality I won't have to worry about. I mean...what would I even say to her? I don't even sign her Christmas cards." He doesn't sound nearly as...emotionally invested in his mother as he does the Order. Though that is almost certainly no surprize by now.

"Should I get you a glass?" He smiles a little. "I got these at an estate sale. They make that glorious crystal ring." And here, the smile widens a little. "But please, no using them and the good silver for musical purposes until after our guest leaves."

Alexander Brandt

Space is made and taken, Alex dropping onto the other end of the couch and turning, arm over the back of the sofa, so that he’s facing Kalen. “Hello is usually a good start. After that’s the hard bit. I’m guessing the same could be said for this, hopefully short term, visitor? I still don’t really get why they’re coming. Are you seen as a threat to the Order or something?”

“You could send her to Chile anyway. Maybe she’d like it there.” He shrugs, unsure of the idea and not being overly serious in offering it. It would be an easy subject to drop, if Kalen isn’t interested in keeping it going.

“Oh, please. Next you’ll be telling me I shouldn’t lick out the soup dish while they’re here. Although now you’d said that, we are so making a wine glass orchestra once things have settles again.”

Kalen Holliday

"Probably not. They might change their with that whole not slaughtering vampires thing. Particularly if they find out that one of them kissed me." Kalen laughs. "Which was a little weird, even for me. Maybe especially for me, considering. But, not bitten or dead, so there's that. I may drop by sometime to see what he can get me for rare books. There is that whole advantage of not having to pretend to be an anthropology graduate student or something."

"They're also interested in what happened to Victoria, apparently someone who knew her wants to get a formal investigation." He smiles a little, half apology. "Not about whether we should have killed her, just, I guess, more what happened. How. Why. I think just for closure.

"And, without Trent here to babysit me, they want to do a face to face check in. I'm just mad at....everyone. But in their case I'm furious that after I have done nothing but give them information they have done nothing but shut me out. And...we have problems for a reason. But, they sent people who perhaps could have lived if they'd been willing to work with us. I let them know a thing is handled and now they're coming to investigate it? I could have investigated this thing with Victoria. And that's all fine, really.

"But they cannot get out of town fast enough, most likely. Unless they turn out to be like Trent or Marcellus. Which could be, but it isn't likely."

He sighs. "And I could probably send my mother to Ramon. He could probably help her, actually. But...I won't. There are plenty of people who need help. That ask for it. He already tears himself apart being enough for the ones that find him on their own. I'm not making her his problem. He does enough for me." That they should have a wine glass orchestra gets a faint smile, but no more. Someone is not in a particularly smiley mood, apparently.

Alexander Brandt

“You know, the more I hear about the Order the less likely I am to want to join. They miss one of their own going nuts and want to investigate what went on here? Oh, please.

“I guess that means that they’re going to want to talk to the rest of us, then? At least, if they’re wanting to investigate what happen, I assume they’re going to want to talk to us. Maybe even hope they do want to? Because if they don’t, then it’s going to be a very unbalanced piece of work. Best hope they bring a comfortable drum to sit on.”

“I never met Trent or Marcellus. I assume that means that they’re not exactly stereotypical members of the Order then? Tell me about them?” They may not be smiley material either, but hopefully they will at least be better memories than the thoughts of what will be arriving on their door in the not too distant future.

Kalen Holliday

"Trent was here for awhile. He was...also kind of a fate Mage. Formal, but very friendly." Kalen does smile now, sudden and real. "Just after that whole coma business he came to see me and I hugged him, which he did not see coming, and after the five seconds it took him to process what was happening, he just says, super gently, 'Mr. Holliday. Are you quite alright?' I used to go hang out in his office at the campus and he'd close the door and we'd have coffee or whiskey or both and talk philosophy. He's cool."

Kalen sighs. "Marcellus...Marcellus was my mentor. He was very...think Camelot. Sort epic quests for a better world and the Round Table and noble and just rulers of men. That's what he wanted for the world. Not...so much the king part, but the qualities that got got ascribed to that king being a real part of how the world was governed.

"It's what he wanted the Order to be again. And he was...he was old. Not, like fragile, old. But old like some of us who stop aging and live for centuries. He knew a lot, he'd done a lot. He had influence and respect and...he could have made it happen. He should have. And he could have, Alce.

"I told him. I told him that if I left the things I saw wouldn't happen. All he had to do was let me go. He didn't. He told me that we would take of our future. That we would prepare. And that no circumstances was his apprentice going out into the world to be hunted alone. He was the first person who ever stayed when it was really hard. Until he died for that, with...everyone else.

"That's who he was, Alce. Strong and wise and impossible. He's the best person I've ever known. I stayed because I can see what he did in the Order. I want to make that happen. And so, whether I'm furious or not, I need to not fuck it up with whoever they send out here. Because the world deserves what we could be, and he deserves the apprentice he knew that I would be. Which is, yet, a great deal better than I am now."

Alexander Brandt

“I wish I’d gotten the chance to know them. They sound like good men.” Alex pauses, watching Kalen with his book and his wine. “Like you are. You saw more of Wesley than any of us did. We were ready to write him off as another one of those things that the night would be better off without. But you? You saw the humanity that was still in him. He might still be dangerous and maybe best avoided, for all sorts of reasons. But he didn’t need to be destroyed because of what he’d become. Isn’t that what the Union does? Hunt and destroy us simply because of what we are?”

“You’re trying to offer something to all of the Awakened in the city, regardless of whether they know the secret handshake or not. Because it’s right. You stand up to the bad things in this world. Because it’s right. You want to improve the Order and make it into what it could – should – be. Because it’s the right thing to do.”

Alex shrugs again. “I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that you’re exactly the sort of person that Marcellus wanted you to be. You may not be perfect, but then who is? You’re still trying to do the right thing, though. And you’re still trying to be more.

“The Order might have its head stuck up its ass when it comes to looking at its members, but you really shouldn’t follow in that particular trait.”

Kalen Holliday

"Well, Trent's still alive. You might meet him. And, if either of us could, you're probably the most likely to meet Marcellus. Though I have no cause to expect his spirit lingered. You meet whatever has become of his soul, another person or something more like the Message. I don't know. But suspect it will not be as a ghost."

Kalen listens to that assessment of himself and half smiles. "Alce. I also about tore about three of my closest friend's heads off for questioning me. And, despite the fact that it is irrational as all Hell, I'm still mad about it. And I know that that questioning was about something other than doubt, mostly. But it's still really hard for me. I'm proud and I'm stubborn and I'm only starting to get how to really be a person and not a weapon or a tool or the embodiment of duty for duty's sake.

"If for no reason other than that not avoiding him puts him in more danger I likely won't see much of Wesley." He takes a breath. "And...you should be careful if you go back there. I've seen no sign he plans to hurt us but I know from something Iris wanted that he's probably more dangerous than I first thought, and I did think he was dangerous. Just not to me, or to us. But I don't think he needs to be killed for being dangerous any more than tigers do. There are far worse things out there. And, more likely than not, if he comes across those things and it is within his power he will stop them." Kalen sighs. "And, as ridiculous as it is, he gave me an excuse to be human. I spent a few days reading poetry, and I danced this ridiculous old Jazz era dance, and I left cute messages. And I let myself feel what that was like, because for it to be convincing I had to. I signed up for dance classes and photography classes and I'm still taking them. I...I am not dating a vampire. But he reminded me that I was more than a war, and even if I never talk to him again, that's really something."

He laughs, and this is lighter. "And I will be nice. I do hope that we get a good presence. It isn't beyond the bounds of possibility certainly." He smiles. "Anyway, how are you? You spent awhile killing those poor paper targets. Everything alright?"

Alexander Brandt

“You could learn to see him yourself, you know. I’d offer to teach you, but I honestly have no idea why what I do does what it does any more than why Enochian makes things happen for you. Is Spirit not widely studied by you guys?” The Order. Flambeau. Take your pick. “And who the hell knows, you might meet him again on this side of the Gauntlet. Just because some spirits sleep away eternity in that river doesn’t mean that they all do. The idea of reincarnation must have come from somewhere, right? It can’t have just been a way to help with the fear of death if there were more people able to look through and see, even more if there were more people doing it with less trouble than we do now. So who knows.”

Alex lobs a cushion at Kalen, laughing. “Oh, I never said you were perfect. You’ve got as much matched baggage to tow around as anyone else. And I think the people you didn’t quite decapitate will be ok, maybe with a bit of time. I’d guess that they didn’t understand why you were getting mad when they thought you were doing something stupidly dangerous. I imagine you’d be doing something very similar if I’d decided to go shoot pool and get a burger with one of Victoria’s pack. Take it as a sign of how much they’d really prefer not to lose you. And... I won’t be going back there. There are better places to find ice cream anyway.”

“You told me, not so long ago, that one of the reasons you didn’t use magic for the mundane stuff was because it cut you off. It sounds like he helped you find a way to get back in touch with what us... I was about to say ‘us poor mortals’, but I guess that’s not entirely accurate is it. I get it, though.”

He gives an exaggerated sigh before smiling. “Oh, well, I guess I can behave myself when they arrive. I might even leave the part when I tell them to fuck off until after they do something to show how poor and unfortunate us orphans are.”

“And I’m doing ok. That was just practice. I’d not been doing as much as I should lately, so wanted to spend some time brushing up. Glad the vampire thing seems to have reached a less precarious balance, even if there is no real guarantee that the new guys in town won’t end up just as bad as the last lot. Or someone worse moves in. But that’s trouble for another time. Is there still a plan to head in and try to guide the dead on their way to the rivermen? Otherwise... I can’t remember if I told you. I bumped into Arionna again. She’s not entirely awful once she puts the barbs away for a minute. I warned her about our fanged friends, anyway. If anyone, she’s probably most likely to go back to the book store. But that’s her choice.”

There’s a sudden grin as Alex remembers something. He fishes around in a pocket for a lighter, flicking it open and holding his hand over the flame. “Oh, and I learnt a new trick.”

"I think that Arionna may become something like Victoria. I spent...a considerable amount of time trying and...I don't think she trusts or cares enough about other people to see an issue with power having costs to them. She's not evil but I doubt she has much to-"

His head tilts and he watches Alexander with the lighter, then murmurs softly. Alien. Angelic. Reverent. And then he smiles.

"So you did. I might be able to help you with it. Though, actually, I think Grace might also be able to, and better than I can. I can work surprisingly well with other Magi, but...at some point I start talking about Angels and people start rolling their eyes. It can still work, but it isn't the easiest of things to translate all the time.

"How does it work for you? You must focus somehow. What do you do? What do you see?"

Alexander Brandt

There’s a sigh. “I can see what you mean. But then I can see that she might have come from a background where it’s better to stick a knife in before the other guy does, even if they don’t intend to attack. So she isolates herself. I don’t know what brought her here, we didn’t get onto that, but she’s in a new city with, as far as I know, no friends. Nobody to tell her when she’s becoming a monster.” He sighs again, deeper this time. “I don’t know. I’m not planning on giving her the grand tour of the Chantry any time soon, but I’m going to try to be a friend if she wants one. That’s got to be better than shooting her if she does turn into Victoria.”

The flame of the lighter flares into life, distorting the air between it and Alexander’s hand with a heat haze. His hand hovers over it – close enough to feel the heat, but not so close as to burn himself.

“I don’t quite get Grace’s way of doing things. I get the idea behind it, but it doesn’t really work for me. I guess I just don’t believe that we’re all data that can be fiddled with and rewritten on a whim any more than I believe that some deity or other click its fingers and everything came into existence. I mean, who created the system running the data? Or the deity that sparked this all off in the first place? Neither feel right when you ask where we all came from, and I’ve never had much of a problem admitting that I don’t know stuff. I don’t know how the world started. ”

Alex leans more against the back of the couch, looking at the flame as it flickers. “I don’t really know how it works. I... this is going to sound so corny. I had a dream. There was a voice in a storm again and I think it was trying to tell me something. I woke up just as I think I was about to hear the words, and it was like I’d remembered something. I felt the heat from a fire and it just felt like I should be able to see more of the world than I could before. Almost like that first day when everything seemed so much more... real, I guess. Does any of that make sense?

“Anyway, I’ve figured out that I can sense more of things that I’m already feeling. Like the heat off this flame, or the energy in the wind.” He looks away from the flame and back to Kalen. “So I can see the heat radiating off you, the warm and cold parts where your clothes are insulating you.” He flicks the lighter closed. “Still not a clue about why what I do works, though. It just does.”

Kalen Holliday

"I tried that being there thing, and it went...very badly. And I know that that isn't inevitable, I was practically that bad before Kharisma and Jack and Marcellus. I had to learn to trust, and it took years and it wasn't easy. As you may note, taming me is yet a work in progress. I am not without any hope for her. But Kharisma and Jack...she was always very gifted with both people and mind magic and they met me when I was incredibly vulnerable only moments after my Awakening when I found out that monsters were real. Perhaps there will come a time when she needs our help enough to let us close to her. I have plenty of empathy for the place that she is, because I have been there. And if I seem like I have little hope, it is only because I appreciate how difficult it is to be dragged away from that place."

"Grace and I both see the universe in a pattern of underlying symbols, and in that we are surprisingly alike. Considering." He finishes his glass of wine, sets it gently on the table, and does not bother to refill it.

"Hmmmmmm...that makes sense considering what you are. I mean that with absolutely no disrespect. It's that you are without a Tradition, so you are, in many ways, without someone to insist that you must have formal symbols. There is a wide range to how formal magic is seen to be, I'm actually incredibly informal for the Order because of training with an Ecstatic initially. You...you are working with your Avatar. Intimately and without any moderating influences. It makes sense that to you there would not need to be more than the world. Our Traditions certainly do strengthen us, but they also bind us. There are advantages to doing it the way you do. It is not for me. But you're not doing it wrong."

Somewhere to the west of Denver, somewhere along I-70, is one of the city’s mountain parks. Home to buffalo and beavers and various other furry wildlife, it tends to turn into a bit of a tourist trap during the warmer months. During the winter, though, footfall drops. The visitor centre closes, the car parks are unchecked, and the only remaining staff are the park wardens charged with monitoring and guarding the park and its inhabitants.

And in this particular car park are a couple of SUVs, their tyre tracks still visible but their windscreens long frosted over. The snow has held off for a couple of days so has become hard on the ground as the shifting temperature allowed it to start to thaw before freezing again. The carpark overlooks the grazing ground for the buffalo – large, shaggy brown lumps in the distance, still managing to find food.

Behind the SUVs is a figure crouched by a bike, repacking pieces of clothing more suited to riding in places of the pieces intended for hiking that he now wears. Walking boots, black padded trousers cover his lower half, with a padded black and white jacket, scarf and hat cover the top. It would take a good eye to recognise the man from a distance, but there are other ways for people to recognise the man.

He sets the now-packed rucksack against the side of the bike as he leans on the saddle, apparently waiting for someone else to arrive.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen arrives, in a slightly battered Jeep that he ended up with because of both winter and zombies. He doesn't have to change, but he does pause to check the contents of the bag that comes out with him and to put on gloves. He has a scarf, he seems to love buying scarves, this one a of thick copper and ivory yarn; still, he doesn't seem to have learned to wear hats yet. Perhaps they muss his hair. He has traded out his favored long coats for a shorter brown one, which seems reasonable enough until you touch it and realize that Kalen is wearing a cashmere coat to go hiking, which is warm enough but slightly ridiculous.

He heads over to Alexander as soon as he's locked the Jeep, bouncing a little because despite the fact that he normally has to be coaxed out into forests, he does like forests. And friends. And for once he's gotten a reasonable amount of sleep.

"Hey, Alce."

Alexander

Alexander pulls a small bag out of a pocket and pulls a pair of sunglasses from it, polishing the lenses before putting them on, tucking the bag back into a pocket, and looks up to watch the exit from the Interstate. The sensation of the arriving storm – a contract to the currently cold, clear, blue sky currently overhead – announcing Kalen’s approach long before he comes into view. He watches the Jeep make its way along the road into the car park and into a nearby space.

He pushes up from the bike and swings up the bag from the ground, settling it onto his shoulders as Kalen gets himself sorted out. “Hey. Warm enough for you?” Alexander’s breath mists in the cold air as he speaks. “How far did you feel like going today?”

Kalen Holliday

"It is definitely not warm enough for me," Kalen says with a little huff and a roll of his eyes. Of course, he could determine he is just not interested in feeling the cold.

"I would say as far as you want, but I think that that might actually kill me." He laughs. "I have no idea. I'm still...learning where my limits are. And they change. Which is good, they were sooooooooo depressing for awhile. But I really don't know."

"I brought us hot chocolate. And marshmallows. I did not get the pink ones shaped like hearts, but mostly because they were raspberry flavored. If there were hazelnut flavored ones in pink hearts, I would totally have gotten them to spite you."

Alexander

“At least you dressed for the weather, although I’m sure you could be wandering around in whatever you happen to swim in without feeling the cold if you wanted to.” He nods towards the edge of the parking lot, towards the start of the hiking paths, and nudges Kalen with his elbow as he walks past.

Alexander smiles as Kalen suggests there could be death by outdoors. “Don’t worry, none of the trails here take more than a few hours to get round. Not unless you want to head off and make your own anyway, but that way lies buffalo. There’s one that’s a couple of hours, if you want to give it a try?”
“Hot chocolate is good. And thank you for not getting the marshmallows with Elsa stamped on them.”

Alexander stops and turns to look at Kalen while he catches up. “So... why don’t you? Stop feeling the cold, I mean.”

Kalen Holliday

"As though I can swim." Kalen laughs again. "I still haven't seen that movie. But, yes, I thought I'd spare you that too."

"That sounds fine. And survivable." He does not hurry to catch up to Alexander. Because Alexander will wait. Because he has no reason to hurry. Because he's about as calm as he ever gets.

"Because...I have always known what we can become, but this last year...Lucia Montanari and Victoria and that thing that we met...." For all that his voice trails off he does not look away from Alexander. "I think that to do something like that is to isolate ourselves from the world. It is an admittedly small degree of isolation, but most of us who become monsters do so by degrees. It may be different for you, you-" He shakes his head. "But for me, the two here who were monsters were of the Order. And we are well known for our arrogance and our isolation and our superiority. I can't be like that, not just because of what I might become but because I can't expect anyone here to trust me if I act like what power I am given to have exists to remove me from the world."

Alexander

“I could teach you. If you wanted me to. But I get that you might not want to. So, y’know. Let me know.” He lets Kalen catch up and then settles into a comfortable pace next to him as the snow-covered asphalt turns into snow-covered dirt path.

He looks Kalen up and down, squinting as he does it. “You’re not that big. I could probably carry you back if it turns out badly. As long as you face down any abominable snow buffalo. My gun’s at home.”

A couple of hundred metres go past without comment after Kalen explains why he doesn’t keep the cold away, when he’s previously commented – on several occasions – his dislike for the cold. It does make a kind of sense. “Do you think there was ever a point when they questioned what they were doing? Or someone asked if they thought that they were going that little bit too far?”

Kalen Holliday

"I'd protest, but it's reassuring that you'll have this if I start dramatically fainting like a Southern belle. Or, you know, from blood loss. But we can probably avoid both of those things today. Probably. I hear that snow buffaloes are prone to goring."

"I don't know. I would hope so. But I could not say."

Alexander

“Well you never know, those vapours might like to attack unsuspecting people in the middle of the mountains. Although I think they prefer victims with rather more cleavage. Maybe that’s where they hide. Do give me some warning if you’re going to swoon, though, and I’ll see if I can find something soft for you to land on.”

Alexander looks down at the trail for a few seconds. “I hope so.” Then there’s a smile and he looks round at Kalen again. “You shouldn’t worry too much, though. There are plenty of people around quite willing to throw things at you if it looks like you’re isolating yourself.”

Kalen Holliday

"Well. If I were trying to hike in a corset, I think I might swoon. But I'm mostly not so aware of the altitude anymore."

He reaches out and grasps Alexander's shoulder for a second. "I know. But Lucia had a cabal. They let her go. I contacted them, because I had hoped that they would help to save her. I thought if anyone could reach her....

"They did not come. And then we killed her. Still bound up with that thing. I wanted better for her. For all of us."

Alexander

“These days, I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Sera walking the other way in a corset and wearing heels. I can’t exactly see her swooning though.”

Alexander stops walking when the hand settles on his shoulder. “I know you did.” He looks down at the trail again, continuing. “You did what needed to be done to stop them.” Alexander looks up again, meeting Kalen’s eyes. “You did the right thing. Right?”

Because telling yourself that enough might eventually convince yourself that it’s true

“And what were you going to say? About it maybe being different for me?”

Kalen Holliday

"There was no better option available to us, and there was no time left to try to find another way. I do not regret that we killed, so much as that we could not free her from that thing first. As with Victoria...there are not so much prisons and rehabilitation programs for Mages. I think that we may have killed her, but still." But still, her soul. Their souls. Kalen is very concerned about souls.

"You're not of the Order. Inside the Order, I am rather an outcast for being rather radically against assuming our superiority and outside the Order I am rather an outcast because not enough of them are against assuming their superiority. If you use what power you have been given...I doubt it will be seen as so sinister.

"And no one was training you with the expectation that you would assume command in his place one day." He says that like its an afterthought, but it is not. Not at all.

The early evening sun is still well above the peaks of the mountains to the west, but its effect on the temperature is starting to wane after the heat of the day. Small white clouds drift leisurely overhead, and a light breeze passes through. There’s no sign at the moment of rain, but there is always the possibility in Denver. The city is always changing, always adapting.

The imminent arrival of a certain storm is guaranteed, though. There had been talk, between the members of their little cabal, of training. Learning to work together; to fight together. Without any current crisis hitting the city – or, at least, none involving Alexander or Kalen – they’ve made plans to take advantage of the time they have to practice. Alex’s bike is parked on the other side of the nondescript warehouse building, helmet hanging from one of the handlebars. He’s walked around the buildings, looking for a good spot to spar, and settled on an area of flat grass. The remote location and, even if there had been anybody who happened to be taking their dog out for a walk, the fence keep anybody who might interfere or get in the way safely away.

So here he is, dressed in loose, black jogging bottoms, vest, and nothing on his feet. He’s currently sat on the grass, legs extended, stretching. There’s a full rucksack lying against the wall of the warehouse. Otherwise, it’s quiet. For the moment.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen is not stretching. Whether that is more of a not yet or a not anymore is not the most certain. He met Alexander outside, where he had a bag and a handful of water bottles. He's barefoot, in a pair of loose-fitting grey silk pants with just a hint of a shimmer and a white tee-shirt. Even having rested, he's still ghost-pale. Kalen is naturally pale, though it looks healthier with only the very faintest traces of shadows beneath those eyes.

He smiles when he sees Alexander, a real smile. Because Kalen loves very few things as much as he loves doing things. And he gets to spar. And he gets to do magic.

It is the magic that he settles across from Alexander to do, kneeling so that he is facing Alexander and closing his eyes. The thing about most sparring is that you have to be so gentle or you have to use padding or you have to end up with bruises you might not be able to afford to have in the morning. The thing about being able to bend Creation to your will is that you can not have to deal with any of those things.

So he settles across from Alexander and he breathes in frost until despite the warmth of the sun on his skin all he can taste is winter. He breathes in the taste of frost and he finds Alexander's breath and then the sun on Alexander's skin and then with the faintest of smiles he lets power spread out over him like frost spreads out over a windowpane, all intricate swirling tendrils until the whole of the glass is opaque.

Alexander Brandt

Kalen smiles at Alexander, and the smile is returned. “Hey. Going to try to get even for me throwing you on your ass before?” He’s remembering a time in a park where an ill-advised hug turned into a short flight over a park bench. Although also not the first time that he’s thrown one of the city’s awakened before realising what was going on. And probably not the last either.

As Kalen sits and starts working his effect, Alex leans back on his hands and watches. He doesn’t understand what’s going on, it’s magic that he hasn’t even begun to understand, but he feels the work itself. The pushing of reality just a little to make things different somehow. What those things are, though... Instead he watches Kalen as he pushes. Feels something slip before it’s put right and the loose ends tied up. Watches him breathe.

“Should I ask..?”

Kalen Holliday

"About how easily unnerved by the sense of ice I am?" Kalen smiles faintly. "I would think you'd know. About it costing more to Work with something you are so uneasy with?" The smile widens. "I would assume you are not blind. About what I just did?" The smile is a real grin now, for all that Effect took something out of him. "Let's just say I don't like to worry too much about being terribly gentle. Reasonably so, perhaps. But I don't think either of us is lacking control."

He rises, then extends a hand to Alexander. "Come. You'll see."

Alexander Brandt

“I knew about the water, but ice too? You must love it when Eleanor’s around, then.” The one meeting wasn’t enough to form too much of an opinion on the woman - beyond her maintaining a certain objective distance – but the memory of her resonance, the feeling of drowning under ice, is hard to forget.

Alexander takes the hand and uses it to pull himself up. “Yeah, about what you were just doing. I could tell something was happening, but couldn’t even begin to guess what.” He shrugs, smiling, content to wait and to see.

He takes a few steps across the grass and turns to face Kalen. “So when was the last time you practiced like this?”

Kalen Holliday

"Eleanor fucking terrifies me." He smiles. "She's good to have with you when you go fight the minions of an evil Umbrood spirit in their lair, though." And so was Sid, though he doesn't mention Sid. Not now. He is, even with some of his weight back, lightly built. He has to brace for Alexander's weight, but he does so easily enough.

"Oh, since I was actually physically imposing. So...two years, give or take."

Alexander Brandt

“Her, or the way she feels? What’s she like?” When you’re not accusing people of thinking you’re Union, or in the middle of melting down after some particularly bad weird shit. She did, after all, seem to want to offer some kind of help. Maybe he should look her up some time...

But not now. Now, Alex settles back into a comfortable stance. One leg in front of the other, back foot pointing to the side, knees bent. “I’m not sure I can see you as physically imposing. But maybe I just haven’t seen you in the right setting.” He shrugs, then grins. “Think you can remember your hands from your feet.”

Kalen Holliday

"Terrifying. But, that can be a good thing when she's killing monsters with you." There is a certain undercurrent of playfulness to that, as Kalen takes a few quick steps back.

"I'm hoping to keep up for perhaps a minute, but I do know how woefully out of practice I am. I'd started training a little, but then, you know, Mindscape. I rather expect you're going to get entirely the wrong idea about how scary the Flambeau are." He does not fall into anything that looks like a proper martial arts stance. Just relaxed, arms up. But then, Kalen never really took much in the way of formal training in this regard. "I was, in a life before this one, in much better shape."

He starts to circle. The movements are unhurried. Relaxed. He is still smiling but his eyes are wary, tracking Alexander's hips and shoulders now, instead of watching his face.

Alexander Brandt

“Do we all turn into terrifying people in the end?” Alexander turns to watch Kalen, equally unhurried but his smile fading. Whether that’s from concentration or something else... His arms come up, hands relaxed.

“Well, given how much time you’ve taken on this poor, squishy newcomer I think it’s only fair that I help you blow off some of that rust. How are you with a gun?”

Kalen Holliday

[Dex+Brawl (try not to laugh too hard here, posting the roll first so I can tailor the post)]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (2, 3, 3, 5) ( fail )

Kalen Holliday

Kalen laughs, although his eyes keep watching. "Oh, come, Alce. I'm like a fucking teddy bear."

And of course, of course he comes forward then. But he has been out of this a long time. He's no judge of distance anymore. Or timing. He's lost track of things that used to be reflexive. His strike skims the edge of Alexander's space, but even if Alexander doesn't move it doesn't connect.

There is a second, when he's already moving when he realizes, there is a little tug of his eyebrows toward the center and a softly muttered curse.

Alexander Brandt

[Dex+Brawl. G'wan dice roller, botch on me now...]

Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (7, 7, 7, 8, 10, 10) ( success x 6 )

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (2, 2, 4, 6, 9) ( success x 2 )

Alexander Brandt

[Theoretical damage, anyway - pulling punches as they're sparring.]

Kalen Holliday

[And, because this is bashing - theoretical soak. Which is Stamina D=6]

Dice: 2 d10 TN6 (8, 9) ( success x 2 )

Alexander Brandt

“Yeah, a teddy bear that can stop time and throw lightning.”

Alexander leans back a little as Kalen takes his swing, watching as he falls short. He follows Kalen’s swing with one of his own, before the other man settles back into his guard position. Possibly a little unfairly, given how out of practice Kalen appears to be. But, then, it’s one way of learning. Quite literally through hard knocks.

He seems to catch Kalen unawares and swings an almost-perfect hook at him, pulling the punch at the last moment when he realises that Kalen isn’t ready. But Alexander’s fist meets Kalen’s shield and it starts to feel like pushing through water – the energy from the movement is drained off, but not completely. He catches Kalen on the cheek, but not hard enough to actually hurt him.

“Ok, you weren’t kidding, were you. Come at me again.”

Kalen Holliday

[Do we do any better this time?]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (1, 2, 2, 3) ( fail )

Kalen Holliday

Alexander taps his face, and Kalen's smile doesn't vanish.

It fucking brightens.

"Ohhhhhhhh...I can't stop time." Pause. Breath. He tries to evaluate a proper distance this time. "You know," he says lightly. "Yet. The lightning I can do."

He starts forward, but he put Alexander into his path this time, tries to sidestep, and ends up sprawled over the ground.

Alexander Brandt

“Stopping time? Been there, done that...” Alexander gives a weak smile. It really was intended as a joke, but it wasn’t the best day of his life. The smile fades completely as he thinks about the truck tyre...

He shakes his head, bringing his thoughts back to the present. Just in time to watch Kalen trip over his own feet and land on the ground. He coughs, trying to suppress the laugh that’s threatening to escape. There’s a twinkle in his eyes as he smiles, bending over to help Kalen to his feet.

Once Kalen is up, Alexander clears his throat although the smile is still there. “Stop rushing it, I’m not going anywhere. Just take a breath, take your time, then try again.”

Kalen Holliday

[Okay. This time?]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (1, 4, 10, 10) ( success x 2 )

Kalen Holliday

Kalen is laughing when Alexander pulls him up, although his eyes are more serious. "Fuck. This was much easier before I started landing under buildings and falling into comas." Under all that playfulness, he's a little unnerved. There was a time when he was terrifying. Of course, he was sparring daily with Marcellus then. In addition to training with a handful of others less frequently. He expected to be off. He had not expected to be this off.

He's spent two years relying on guns and magic to survive. Mostly magic. He can manipulate probability and he can make himself practically bulletproof and he can command electricity and fire. He cannot manage to consistently hit a non-moving target with his hand.

Two years ago, that was easy.

He takes another breath and then comes at Alexander again. A touch more slowly. And this time he get the distance right.

Alexander Brandt

“If you could do it once, you can do it again. I’m more than happy to help you practice, if you like. See if Grace wants to join in too. Just imagine yourself as Eleanor with a big stick, if it helps. Or get a big stick, if you think that would be better. Or maybe Alyssa in a bad mood. Why did she take a swing at you before, anyway?”

Alexander takes a step back and faces up to Kalen again. “Try to stay on your feet.”

[Leg sweep. Dex/Brawl, +1 diff]

Dice: 6 d10 TN7 (4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8) ( success x 2 )

Kalen Holliday

[Dex+Ath]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (2, 3, 3, 4, 10) ( success x 1 )

Kalen Holliday

Why did Alyssa take a swing at him? Kalen's smile actually widens a little at the memory of Basil. Of the Carnevale. Of warmth flooding over winter.

"Technically, she was taking a swing at someone else. There was a crowd. There were other Magi there. They...were playing a bit. Alyssa did not approve. Probably you would not either. I was...well...I was at least not in a mood to strongly protest. But I've been to places where there were similar Workings, if not quite the same and...." And those nights are a tangle of memories of the taste of strawberries and salt, of the warmth of people's skin, the lingering sense of their hair and their limbs against him. The weight of them. Their bodies and their dreams and their oceans of potential.

"I was concerned that if she hit him while we were in a crowd whose inhibitions were lowered the violence would spark off a riot. So I stepped between them. She never actually deliberately hit me.

"Well. She did throw something at me. A shoe, I think. Right after the whole coma thing. She was a little irate about that. And that whole my being a terrible friend thing. I really am kind of terrible at that. Ah. Sorry."

Stay on his feet. He's too slow, really. He isn't too slow in the end because Alexander can connect, but there is no real force left in the strike. There is a second where his eyes widen but then the Effect bleeds the force out of Alexander's sweep and he does, in the end, stay on his feet.
